NAC 82 versus 102

Posted by: Reto D on 20 August 2001

Hi,

This spring I bought a brand new 102 (with NAPSC).
So far I'm happy with it. Now, I'm wondering (a bit late, I know) about how much better the 82
would be. It's certainly not the difference like
between a 52 and a 82 but.... what do you think?

Anyway, I'm going to upgrade my CD 3 with a CDX.
I am right that this upgrade is a better choice
than upgrading from 120 to 82?

Any opinions?

Cheers.

Do the CDX first, then get the 82. The difference betwen a 102/Napsc and an 82 is incredible - once you have got the CDX. The 102 sounds a lttle harsh and edgy in comparison. With the 82, round earth qualities, such as natural tone and pin-sharp imaging enter the equation, as well as improvenents in timing and dynamics.

It's always a nice day for it, have a good one wink

Upgrade your source first to CDX, then add a XPS or consider a Supercap for the 102 (a 102 with Supercap is excellent and perhaps as good/better than a 82/Hicap IMO). Upgrading to the 82 is only worthwhile after you have a first-class source, although it is better than a 102.

My choice would be CDX - XPS - Supercap then replace the 102 with a 52.

Sounds like you're using a dealer.

Personally, I've never been a great fan of either the CD 3x series or the CDX, so YMMV on what I suggest.

You may find adding a hicap to the 102 does what you want. You may not, but it's an easy dem. A hicap will last you a LONG time, and a supercap/ 52 could be long way off.

Until you've had a proper dem of a PSU, you won't know what it does or what you're missing. Of all my upgrades, the hicap was probably the best objective value.
