New needle time

Posted by: Not For Me on 26 February 2004

I think it is time for a new m/c needle in my study system (LP12 / Ittok / Arkiv A)

What are the options about retipping / trade in / alternatives ?

Budget about £300 ish, I like Linn, but am not tied to them irreversibly.

Opinions invited.

Hi David

I recently had a new Dynavector DV10x5 in my Ittok, with which I am very pleased.

It's a high output m/c cartridge.

£250.

i concur that the 10x5 is a mighty fine cart, but it's high output mc, so you'll need a mm phono stage.

David,
Take a look at what £300 buys you if you buy something abroad. There are several decent sellers in HK and Japan on ebay. I saw a Ortofon Jubilee the other day for £500, which is £1500 uk, DV cartridges also appear from time to time at very appealing prices.

I'd suggest an AT OC9. I got one from the States
for $300 around £200 plus a bit of tax. Given the exchange rate today you may get it for quite a bit less than £200. It arrived in 8 days. It's a great cart and a genuine bargain. I could let you have the web link if interested.

Thanks to all advisors so far.

Yes Scribe, a link would be useful.

I wounder how it would work with a 'K' board?

Has anyone recently used the Linn trade in scheme? Is it still going ?

Yes. I traded an Arkiv B for an Akiva a few months ago.

The ATOC 9 is an absolute bargain. A real Troika beater

I got mine from Phonophono.de. They're doing a very good deal on Rohmanns at the mo. Very Tempting.

Do you not have to pay import duty on carts from the US of Eh?

Linn now only offer a trade in service via retailers. they NO LONGER offer to 'service' or re tip.. I checked this out only last week. From memory an arkive = £500 & an arkivea = £800 on trade in,so I guess you need to look elswhere with the budget you mention as a new arkiva is a little more... I am in the same boat and seriously considering the OC9 as had had an OC7 for years and liked it a lot...

Here it is. It's even cheaper now. It'll probably be free by the time you get it. Tax is 17% you have to pay the post man when it arrives. It may get through without, I never pay tax on CD's from the States

BTW I use K boards. 32.5 with 72 boards HiCap 135 into intro 2's. It really kicks, it's quite bright, wide open, very detailed and involving. Extremely smooth which I think always characterizes a good cart.

Another vote for the ATOC9.
Stunning for the price.

That OC9 from LP Gear is indeed a bargain. Just ordered one to replace my ancient Karma.

I'm hoping it won't be too bright with K boards

Have no experience with latest MK.II model but previous wasn't compatible with Prefix K - way too bright.

Ah well, the old Karma's sounding like an am radio, so maybe a bit of brightness won't go astray

David, If you like your present cartridge why not have it retipped? I have just had my Kiseki Black Heart overhauled and retipped by Expert Stylus Company and it's come back sounding as good as new. Cost £235 and excelent service as well.

Got my OC9II from the US of A in 8 days and it's great, I'm enjoying my records again.

Don't know why I persisted with the Karma for so long. It was tonally good but always a bit of a music kiler, even at it's peak.

Have you considered Grado? I just put a Grado Sonanta Reference (high output version, US$ 500) in my Well Tempered (Nait 2 and old Rega Elas) and the music is great. To my ears, Grados excel at tone and being very musical and rhythmic. Good imaging too. Not as detailed as some MCs, but oh so musical. (Never tried a Grado in a Linn, myself, though.)
