Any UPnP Server software recommend for NaimUniti

TVersity is fine and works ok in my setup here.

1) What does the Uniti suggest when you select UPnP. Does it suggest No Servers or does it allow you to browse the list, but the music is not available?

2) Have you tried Twonky? If so, does it give similar results?

Operating system, and how you are sharing stuff at the moment would be useful info.

Untiti showed No Servers

And I set TVersity well in my PC (Win XP as OS).
I can see the TVersity share folder in other PC.
But Uniti said No server, the status is well connect in Uniti.

im using foobar (with the server addon) - installed it, set up router to point to server, added directories to foobar, and uniti saw it straight away

check your tversity is not blocked though firewall as I didnt allow internet access to the program at first (server has no screen)

Try Allegro Media Server on PC. Should work quite well, and will pick up untagged WAV files from iTunes XML file.

I think before we go mad and start installing allsorts of UPnP server software everywhere on this guys machine, we need to find out why TVersity isn't working and then fix it - then he can decide on a package of choice (TBH TV seems ok overall once configured).

Ok, so the Uniti really can't see UPnP for some reason, given "No Servers".

-Does iRadio work?
-Are your network settings on the Uniti DHCP or static and set up correctly (hopefully above question will answer this)?
-Are you using wireless or wired?
-Is UPnP enabled on your router?
-Is the folder you pointed TVersity to public or limited access?
-Is the TVersity service actually running? Go to Settings page and click "Start Sharing". If it's already running it will bitch at you.
-In the Library->edit Item dialog under "Search For", have you got the "Audio" box ticked

Just been playing around this week as I got my naimuniti on Saturday, I have a Mac so tried elgato eyeconnect software... seemed very hit and miss at getting a connection with naimuniti and when I did get a connection it could only see WAV files and not FLAC, also the only way I could get a connection was to open up port 80 on the naimunity ip address. Removed it last night and tried twonkymedia... it just works, not the greatest of interfaces but then you only go in to that ocaasionaly.

On the other hand you could always forget this digital stuff and hook up an LP12... this seriously sings through this wonderful little box

I have at various times attempted to run uPNP servers (TVersity/Twonky, etc) with my PS3 and the result is hit and miss (mostly misses.) It was so flaky that I have never been never bothered to stream anything to my PS3. Note that I am able to stream high def audio to my Slim Transporter bullet proof, so the network is quite robust.

Hence when I read that the Uniti is streamed on uPNP server platform I was skeptical.

I would be less skeptical if Naim bundles with it a "tested" version of a uPNP server or at least have a approved list of servers with version numbers listed.

Is there such a list in existent?

WMP11, Twonky, Tversity, Allegro, MediaTomb (Linux), Fuppes (Linux) (of the current versions) have all been tested on my setup here with no issues once the configurations have been setup correctly (at both ends).

I have found most issues to be down to either:-

1) Mis-configuration of IP settings on the Network/Uniti.

2) Wifi issues:

-Not all access points are alike (signal to noise ratio-wise at the transceiver)
-General bandwidth issues, i.e. what else is the Wifi bandwidth being used for.
-Distance/environment/channel allocation needs to be taken in to account here. If everyone in your locality is using Wifi Ch6....
-Encryption, WPA encryptions (TKIP/AES) will have a larger bandwidth overhead over WEP 64/128 (less secure).

3) Buffering in the NAS. Some NAS's with smaller data-buffers tend end up with drop-outs in the audio stream, specifically when playing (non-transcoded) full bitrate music. This is particularly evident when used in conjunction with WiFi...

4) Available resource on the PC itself (specifically when using UPnP software rather than a NAS with UPnP support). A PC with limited resouce (i.e. low memory, CPU, fragmented hard disc etc) can cause audio dropouts or even not show the UPnP server at all if processor intensive tasks are in action, such as virus scanning etc.

These NAS drive models have been used in our lab for test purposes and seem to perform well overall (non-exhaustive list):

After finding that our music server running FreeNas was having problems with it's UpNp server module I decided to give XBMC a go on one of our workstations and have found that it works very well, no drop outs running the Uniti wirelessly.

XBMC (Xbox Media Center) is a free app that was originally developed for Microsoft's Xbox (original) and has now been ported for use on a number of platforms, it's free, easy to configure and looks nice ;-)

Western Digital MyBook World Edition NAS drives seem to do a good job too, we have supplied them as the recommended storage for the Sonos system and I see no reason why they will not work equally as well with the Uniti.

Man, why even deal with all of this crap.

The Uniti sounds neat but running it wirelessly seems like such a pain.

Hearing all the problems people are having with NAS and networks, eye-something, Upnp etc... makes me cherish a simple hardwired PC to DAC.

Why does it have to be overly complex and difficult? Why not just keep it simple?

If i decide to move my PC into another room, i will simply drill a hole in the wall for the Toslink to go through.

It's actually quite simple, provided your computer is manageable (to you). This is the modern man's equivalent of changing the oil or replacing the tire on an automobile; you shouldn't have to disassemble the engine block or remove half of the subsystems to have a functional car.

With a known, properly set-up computer, I can walk into a retailer's shop, join their wireless or wired network from my laptop, and have files streaming to the NaimUniti within minutes (from a Mac, Allegro + EyeConnect), for sake of argument. It doesn't matter whether it's a wired or wireless connection–just requires a bit of adaptability....

I agree wholeheartedly. But I am starting to feel, ironically, as others did when they first approached "Distributed Audio". They likened the experience to "Playing with Computers", not "Playing Music".

Except for the fact that I no longer get up to put a CD in a player, my experience with HD based music is as simple as possible. PC with a Digi output, into a DAC. Why make it more difficult than that?

The PC connects to the HDTV, in most people's living rooms. My cable box is louder than my PC, so what is there to fret about?

If i couldn't bear having a computer in my listening room, I would simply get longer cables, or use a closet or something.

Why people feel the need to make everything like surfing the web and downloading media from external sources is beyond me. If your music is not locally stored, I would understand somewhat. But streaming music from the "other room" seems, to me, to be unnecessary at best.

Just stumbled across yet another UPNP server from Illustrate (makers of DBpowerAmp). Runs as a service in windows so should be unobtrusive. A once only setup is well explained on their Website.

Just thought I would mention it as I have been using XBMC as a UPNP server and I think this will work better and be less intrusive.

I'm using EyeConnect on my Solidbody MBPro and
UPnP is working well but had this happen, LaCie drive,hanging vie Firewire, could not have its files read except for one song from one album, which seemed weird. The library is consolidated in iTunes but I have the box checked to not import music files into the iTunes library. Do i need to add the LaCie files to the content page in EyeConnect?

I'm new about this upnp software... But doesn't have NAIM the upnp software? Isn't included with the player?

Having had a chance to use Asset UPnP over the last week or so, I can say that it has not worked that well for us...and we are back to using XBMC - which has worked flawlessly so far. However for PC users it would seem logical to try Media Players built in UPnP server.

Could you advise how, in as non-technical a way as possible, how to get the server add-on bit for foobar and how to get it working? I did try to follow some instructions from the internet but failed!

For cross-device compatibility we recommend Asset v2 (which also features Internet Radio, such as BBC, etc). Asset v1 was written specifically with Linn DS support in mind, where-as Asset v2 expands compatibility.
