RB900 on LP12
Posted by: Eric Barry on 19 March 2003
Anyone heard this combo? Did Paul Messenger use it? How would it compare to the usual suspects: Aro, Ekos, Ittok, and maybe a Morch. Any installation issues (my LP12 doesn't have the corner bracing).

Whilst I do not own a LP12, it seems universally recognised that to most peoples ears, the Aro is the perfect partner to the LP12.
I think you are confusing the RB1000 and the RB900.
Paul Messenger has tried a RB 1000 but I believe he still uses his Aro.
The RB1000 retails at £1000 whilst the Aro is around £1400, so for the small difference, I would go for the Aro.
Also I believe the RB900 is about to be discontinued.

LP12 / RB1000
As well as fitting the RB1000, Roy Gandy also added the latest P9 PSU to Paul Messenger's LP12. Did'nt he [Mr. Messenger] prefer this set-up over his regular LP12 / Aro?

...I recall Art Dudley writing about putting an Aro on a P9 and finding the combination not synergistic.

I was indeed considering picking one up for $595 new with warranty. I wouldn't expect it to match an Aro, but if it would comfortably beat an Ittok I'd go for it. However, I have now searched the archives, and based on Bob Edwards' comments, I guess I'll pass.
There is a very well-respected US dealer who put Regas on LP12s all the time, but there is also the long-lived consensus that Rega arms aren't well-suited. However, one of the main problems (as I see it) with the RB250/300 on an LP12 is it's impossible to get the arm to stay really tight on the armboard, which the RB900 sidesteps by it's three point mounting. That coupled with the improved bearings might make it a contender.

Hang on, using a Rega PSU with a P9? THis opens up a whole new set of opportunities/can of worms...

Eric,
Before dismissing the rb250 on a LP12 (my setup), check out the comments of Ron the Mon on the PFM site.
cheers,
