Unexciting Naim ?!
Posted by: Bas V on 12 December 2002
Hi Guys,
For a while now I have my new system: CD5, Nait 5, 2 HiCaps and ProAc Tablette 50's on Target HR60 stands.
Now, everything sounds right, but I miss the emotion I am used to with Naim. As I recall, my first Naim based system (Sony 555es, Naim 92+fc+90/3 and Monitor Audio Studio 2's) seemed to drag me much more into the music. As I said, it sounds okay, no faults, but a bit dull. What could be the culprit here? Might it be the ProAcs, or is it the new Naim sound which isn't totally my cup of tea. I wonder what you think...

Try moving one or both of the speakers a couple of inches out or in, but not too much. I'm serious! Sometimes that's all that's required to get the excitement or snap back.

I was thinking about that Per. You have the Credo's in cherry, right? I still have my Intro's, though they are at a friend right now. However, as they are big black boxes, I don't think they would cheer my room up. In cherry it could be otherwise. However, I will collect my Intro's within a few weeks and try them out. What are you selling the Credo's for Per?

Well for a start you could sell your CD player, I sure that I can offer you a completely unreasonably low price for it.
On a more serious note, I'd put money on the speakers too. Have a think about your room acoustics before you jump in.
One other idea, consider adding a decent stand for your system. Personally I found that adding a mana amp stand to my system made as much difference as upgrading my CDP. Not that I'm saying this is a universal fix, but it might be worth trying.

Sounds like a mains problem to me. Have you added any toys in the same room? e.g TiVo, digibox or anything that might have a switched mode power supply in it? Also, if you have a tv in the room, do you leave it on standby? I find that this kind of thing can affect the enjoyment factor even if it doesn't necessarily affect the sound quality directly. If you have a toy with an SMPS in it, you need to play around with separate spur, separate earthing, etc. The 3-series didn't seem as easy to affect as the 5-series. Perhaps it's because of all the extra resolution that the 5-series comes out with. It's easier to mess up possibly, but I've found I have to be as careful with the 5-series as with the higher end stuff, whereas the 3-series was more resistant to these effects.
Regards,
Frank.

Nothing wrong with ProAcs - they're great speakers that 'swing' as well as anything.

The Naim 5 replaced the Naim 3 maplifier whereas the 92/90 was the baby preamp/poweramp combo.
Why the step down?

The obvious choice should have been to replace the flatcap with a hicap.
Now you have a Nait 5, try getting it adapted for use as a preamp and buy one of the 5 series poweramps.
That should give you the extra quality in amplification you require.

I think they are excellent speakers. I've had the 1SC's myself a time ago. HOWEVER-- I just do not think they involve you. I learned about this factor with the NEATs I just demoed. Very involving. Not maybe as "refined" sonding as a Proac-- but they just play music and get you interested. I thought my Proacs were very good SPEAKERS. Always relaxed sounding with a beautiful top. They just didnt really involve me. Maybe THATS the problem.

Well, about the change of system, look it up on the forum. I know I have done a step back...
As for my problem, I will first try my Intro's within a few weeks again. I'm very curious what will happen. I also think the ProAcs sound very good, but maybe just too refined for my liking!
