Netgear ReadyNAS Duo
Posted by: gone on 18 February 2010
I've been using a TimeCapsule with my HDX, but now we have an 'approved' list of NAS devices, I'm thinking of getting one dedicated to music storage. There's a good offer the ReadyNAS at the moment, but does anyone have any experience of how noisy it is? This will be sitting upstairs in the study, but our house gets so quiet at night, it's possible to hear very low levels of fans/disks/processors from the bedroom. I had to mount the TimeCapsule on a foam block because of the noise, even though I know it to be a very quiet device.
Any advice appreciated

I had a ReadyNAS Duo but sold it for noise reasons. Now I have a RipNas, which is very quiet but a little bit expensive

I use one for backup and as a upnp server. The reviews led me to believe it was quiet enough to keep it in the lounge - nope. It's a noisy bugger, and it now lives in the garage! Apparently, replacing the fan can make a big difference, but this would void your warranty.

good input - thanks. Sooo, of Paul's list, what's the quietest? The RipNAS is over the top for what I want - unless of course I end up with a KlimaxDS..... Nice looking though

I seem to remember at last years BBQ factory visit, the Dev team were using a 4/5 bay Thecus NAS. It seemed quiet and looked sexy

Been happy with th D-link DNS 323 which is on the "approved" list.
Cost effective. Now you can get the NAS with 1.5 TB mirrored (3 TB JBOD) for about $400 USD (which includes tax).

I have a readynas duo, which is kept upstairs in spare bedroom. Can't hear it from downstairs but it can be heard upstairs. I have mine set to power down at midnight and then wake up in the morning which works fine for me.

Hi Allan
I used to use it with a Uniti. I had problems ripping my cds on a mac and the RipNas was a much better solution. Recently I purchased a HDX, so the ripping feature isn't that important but I will keep it as NAS for the HDX (so far it was convenient to copy online purchased music on the RipNas and play it through the HDX (or Uniti). It really is very quiet, the sound so far is great and up to now I controlled it with PlugPlayer on my iPhone. Will see how the iPhone application with HDX will work

I've got a ReadyNAS duo in the study. I never hear it at all. It's situated on a "metal shelf" bookshelf facing forward.
A Vantec NexStar LX NAS drive that I have connected into the Apple Airport Extreme I hear often when it winds the disc up.

For what it's worth, I bought a ReadyNAS Duo 1TB version, and I can report that it's very quiet - when you first switch on, the fans go at full pelt (panicked me a bit) but when the power management kicks in, it's effectively silent - no disturbed sleep yet thank goodness.
Might be different when I get the other (free) 1TB drive and install it......
I guess it only makes a noise when there's heavy duty reading/writing going on, but HDX doesn't seem to stress it.
It looks like an excellent little box for the money
Cheers

I'm planning to order the ReadyNAs Duo ITB this week to take advantage of the extra drive offer.I'm not too bothered about the noise as it will be in a separate room. Is there any discernable difference in sound quality between Cds ripped to the HDX internal hard drive compared with Cds ripped from the HDX to the NAS? (I think I'm right in thinking that youv'e already got the 1.5a software on your HDX).
Cheers

Hi Jon
I've only ripped a couple of CDs to NAS so far, but I don't think there is any difference. I think the only way to set up a comparison would be to move an already ripped file from the hard drive to a NAS music store. I've done that, and it sounds the same IMHO.
Currently listening to a newly downloaded Porcupine Tree FLAC from the NAS, and it's sounding rather fine.

Thanks for the information.I'm expecting the HDX software update next week so should coincide with the NAS delivery. Still waiting for the DAC though - my dealer reckons within two weeks -hope so as I put the order in three months ago!

I was advised not to go for the 1TB as it was less reliable. This is only hearsay but worth researching.
Mine is a little noisy so the auto powerdown function is handy at nighttime.

I to am considering the purchase of Readynas Duo, one of the attractions is wireless streaming without having to have the PC switched on. I do not wish to store my music in mp3 for obvious reasons. Does anyone know what lossless codecs the Readynas can stream to the Uniti?

I have FLAC and WAV on mine which both work fine. I use FLAC all the time WAV was just an experiment when I 1st got Uniti and redynas.
The readynas uses TwonkyMedia so it should work with all the formats listed on their web site.

Thanks - I didn't realise it came with Twonkymedia installed. Perfect!
