Just listened to her to the radio - I NEED to by one of her records. I'm not too keen on her Gospel period though.
Oh, and the liver the better - any thoughts ? Thank you.

I'd have to recommend 'Soul 69 ' as a necessary purchase although it's mis-titled as it's her 'jazz' album. It spawned no big hits but is magnificent as is the line up- Kenny Burrell,King Curtis,Pepper Adams,Ron Carter to name a few.
If you prefer her R'nB sound then any of the early Atlantic records are good, especially 'I never loved a man' as it contains 'Respect','save me' and the title track. Also good is 'Aretha Now'.You really can't go wrong...

All of Aretha's Atlantic LPs from the 60's are great. "I've Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" is a must-have, as is "Lady Soul". Also very good from a couple years later is "Spirit in the Dark". And if you think "liver" is better, there's "Live at the Fillmore".
