Should my Nait 5 have a hum?
Posted by: Mr_Sukebe on 07 June 2002
I've just bought a Nait 5 amp, used with my Linn Kabers using Linn K20 cabling.
With no music playing you can hear a low hum when you put you're head next to the speaker.
Is this normal, or should I be returning the unit for a replacement?

There are a number of things you will notice with your new purchase.
1. With no music playing and the volume at nought and the mute button on, the speakers will still 'hiss'. Note this word they should hiss, like a pissed off swan if they are hummintg then you probably have your word definitions screwed up!
2. Also the unit itself will emit a hum, this is the transformer and will vary in intensity throughout the day, do not worry.
3. When you switch the unit off, (which should be rarely) the speakers will emit a big 'thump' as the caps discharge.
4. Music will take on a different meaning, this will enable you to always be in a perpetual state of debt as you purchase much music every week.
5. Eventually you will become a weird net geek full off useless whit and advice, (optional)

A 'hiss' would be normal, a 'hum' indicates a problem. Probably a cabling or installation issue. If you actually have to put your ear against the speaker to hear it then it's probably not worth pursuing.
Which input do you have selected when doing this test?
FWIW I would be surprised if a Nait 5 was an ideal match with Kabers, why did you choose it?

Move your head further away from the speaker and you will hear less hum.
Seriously, a slight hiss is very normal - hum not. If you can hear it at a resaonable distance then you have a problem - if not no

Nice reply, thanks for that, most appreciated.
Interesting, just checked for the hum/hiss (please don't ask me to define between the two), and it's now not there.
I can only assume that either:
1. The hum was caused by another electrical appliance somewhere nearby interfering with the power supply
2. Using the unit has discharged whatever was building up.

The hum was on both the CD and AV input (don't use any others).
Easy answer on the choice of a Nait. The Kabers were an Ebay special and only cost £310. For the money, they're simply awesome.
I would have loved to have gone for a bigger Nap seperate amp, but unforunately I'm a poor IT worker, and my wife takes precedence on monetary spending of really large sums of money.
