Custom AV rack – Solid or Veneer

I have finally decided to get a AV rack made, as I really haven’t found anything suitable off the shelf. I have been talking to a furniture maker and he has suggested using veneered wood rather than solid.

Quote:
Do you mind if I ask why you want solid wood? The reason I ask is that solid wood (rather than veneered board) is much more prone to movement with changes in humidity, is more expensive to buy in the first place and more expensive to make because sawn planks have to planed and thicknessed, then edge joined to make up the panels. Finally, the end result is barely visually different to a veneered cabinet. The veneered cabinet on the other hand is much more stable, predictable, easier to work and less expensive - which is why we and everyone else of whom I am aware use veneer for technical furniture.

I really know nothing about having furniture built, do anyone having any opinions on this?

Cheers

I was in the cabinet making trade for several years and I agree with your furniture makers comments. It's still your choice of course but I would go for the veneered version.

Another vote for veneered version.

Go for MDF shelves with a real wood veneer, and a water based varnish on top. Looks really nice, since it's real wood on the surface, and the MDF damps the vibrations nicely, helping the electronics sound better.

I now have three racks as the equipment list has grown in that room and now bi-amp the fronts so 7x135's Winker
