It comes as a download (Oct 10th) and/or as a discbox (Dec 3rd). The discbox is £40 which is vinyl and CD with extra content. The download price is up to you subject to a transaction fee.

Novel marketing idea.

I wish they'd put out a live recording. Saw them live in the summer of 2006, and was absolutely floored. They rocked the socks off everyone all the while preserving their electronic/progressive touch.

There's always: I Might Be Wrong (Live Recordings)
Posted on: 01 October 2007 by Edouard S.
I had forgotten about that one, although I would have wanted something more recent. Is it good ?
Posted on: 01 October 2007 by ryan_d
Edouard,
I might be wrong only contains songs off Kid A and Amnesiac. It is good, but doesn't come close to seeing them. Like you say.....they can floor you with their show.

Agreed, Radiohead live is/are the real deal.

There's numerous bootlegs around of Radiohead concerts if that's your thing.
Posted on: 01 October 2007 by Edouard S.
I usually don't really like the sound on bootlegs, although I haven't heard on in years. Maybe technological progress has made for better sounding bootlegs.

A lot of the bootlegs you can get now are direct recodings straight from the mixing desk so the quality is usually prety good. If yo can get one of these you won;t go wrong.

Any suggestions, or am I out of line here ?

Definitely out of line.

Ahem

But

If you're familiar with torrents then this will probably be the best way to find them.

Hmm, can't say I am very familiar with torrents.

Thanks for the info however !

I'm amazed. The download price is "up to you", I thought this was a wind up and put 1p in, plus the 45p transcation fee, that's an album for 46p. Very good value. But the diskbox contains 2 cd's and two heavyweight 12" LP's (180g?), for £40-including a lyric booklet and artwork, and the download-as well.

Finally, a band has done what audiofiles really want...CD/LP and e_music, collectablesin one box!

Have fun.... Cool

Is that really what people want?

One of the things that puts me off downloading is the quality, but if it was CD or better I'm not really fussed. However, surely what people want is the choice - to be able to buy vinyl or CD or whatever suites them. With this it seems to be cheap download, £40 box set or nothing.

I suspect their decision is a little foolish. They'd have been better off charging a set low price otherwise enough people may pay just 1p that it won't make much money.

Interestingly, Linn Records will sell downloads starting at 320k MP3, moving up to CD quality and (for a premium) studio master.

Radiohead aren't tied to a record deal at the moment. It seems to me that they are doing something similar to the The Mail on Sunday Prince free giveaway but with a download. The idea of letting people get their latest album for next to nothing may well get people interested in Radiohead and buy more of their back catalogue?

For the existing fans then the option of the discbox is to satisfy them I guess.

I think this represents a return to form for Radiohead. After only one play of the download I like it enough to invest in the discibox.

Admire the innovation in trying a new approach to selling music that caters for all tastes. Looking forward to the new Charlatans release but as far as I'm aware there is no option to buy on vinyl for hardcore fans. Unless Alan McGee has other ideas after this?

The 160Kps MP3's are lossy and compressed. The sound apparently is not bad as long as you don't turn up the volume and then you get distortion. I think I will wait for the album.

Can somebody clarify this for me. I can pay 46p upwards for a poor quality download, or £40 for a box set including vinyl that I cannot play. Will the CD be available at any time on its own?

The dowload version seems to me like paying for a sampler.

You don't actually have to pay anything for the download.
Posted on: 11 October 2007 by Bruce Woodhouse
..I thought 45p admin fee?

I'm not quibbling at that, just the 'value' to me of a poor quality format.

Ok let's forget about price ,sound quality etc. Music is Great even in mp3 and it's like snowball becoming avalanche still growing on me. With Arcade Fire best album of the year-but it can change Big Grin

It's the new Radiohead album, it's free, and it's available now, before it comes out in what is bound to be a gorgeous box set.

How anyone can say anything about the quality of how it'll sound on their hifi is beyond me.

It's great - I've been playing it all day, at home, on my iPod, in the car...

free?
Posted on: 11 October 2007 by Chief Chirpa
Yes, free.

I didn't pay a penny for it, though now I want the box set real bad, and I think I'll search out some of their other records that I don't already have.

I've never been a big fan of theirs, and if this hadn't been available like this, I wouldn't have heard it until I borrowed it of someone else.

So, they're going get my money soon enough, after all. It's a brilliant idea, and will give the big record companies a much-needed wake up call.

Not sure I agree.

Most people will probably ignore the box set once they spent their 46p. All and all an encouragment of medeocrity from a sound quality perspective.

The whammy £40 is an easy kill because it targets the die hards who would purchace a Radiohead commemorative loo roll if advertised. And for the punter who wants quality in a single format? Nada.

A marketing approach which reduces choice and promotes heavily compressed media. Progress?

This is not a pop at the music. I saw them perform at V last summer (including creep) and they blew the crowd away.
