This business model can only ever work for established rich bands. No doubt radiohead have their own studio and did most of the leg work themselves.
This is not a wake up call for the music industry, though god only knows they need one.

I thought 'Hail To The Thief' mediocre and Thom Yorke's solo effort dismal. I'd not have paid a full CD price for the new effort because I'd given up on the band but I thought I'd risk a whole £2.50 on the download.
The new album is, however, excellent. The flexible pricing has 'worked' for them, I've become somebody likely to buy their music again in future.
As for sound quality, well burnt to CD it is suprisingly decent, although you suspect much of that is to do to their usual high quality production. This does matter, 90% of my listening is at home, not on an iPod or in the car.
If I choose to buy the CD later on for a better reproduction they'll have sold it to me twice! Perhaps this business model is not so daft after all.

Bruce,
I actually liked Hail to the thief, but bought it on vinyl and it plays at 45rpm, so got to use that horrible adapter which just kills the sound quality.....I know I should get a Lingo! (he says ducking for cover
).
Not got this record yet, but they are a band that I always find something interesting in their music, be it just the fact that they like to experiment. I'll probably hold out for the vinyl anyway, as I've got the rest of their stuff on the black stuff.
All the best
Ryan

Ryan,
I got a s/h Lingo plus the Conn401E connection lead for use with Naim gear - no problems at all with sound! None of the fabled interference! Or cheaper (and better than Valhalla) a Hercules does 45 as well.

Will the CD be available at any time on its own?

Yes,next year will be on stores, from what I read on newspapers. The trick is to be able to have concerts and merchandizing like t-shirts for a fair price, instead the profits of this beeing taken for the label-editor-!So you will have to wait!
