LCD tv with decent sound?

Posted by: Mutant Enemy on 20 February 2009

Are there any?
I need a standalone tv (no amp or speakers in the room) and have been trying the usual brands on for size. Most have a great picture but sound terrible!
Has anyone bought one which sounds ok?

Thnx

...is an oxymoron Winker

None that I have ever heard; most people complaining about theirs is all I have heard

From what I can make out many people aren't overly impressed by the picture quality either unless you have a blue-ray player in use all the time. Perhaps consider a plasma?

Some of the sony and samsung lcds are catching up fast in the picture stakes IMO. Do plasmas generally have better sound?

We recently bought a Samsung 26" LCD and are generally very pleased. Will rarely use the in- unit sound as I usually watch with no sound (preferring to listen to the hi-fi) or watch dvd which is run through the hi-fi.

The few times I have used the in-unit sound it is very average. More annoying is the volume control goes from 1 to whatever the top number is and somewhere around 15 you hit the transition from barely audible to way-too-damn-loud, in the space of 3-5 steps. Not unlike radio in the car.

Overall, nice set, great picture, very reasonable price.

We have a Samsung 26" LCD TV. The picture is superb but the sound is appalling! I think the sound on most LCD TV's will be pretty dire since the cabinets just aren't big enough to get decent sized speakers into. The solution I use is to plug a 2.1 computer speaker system into the TV headphone output. This retains remote control of volume. I use an Acoustic Energy system (around £100). It sounds superb and is very discrete looks wise. Even a £30 2.1 system will sound loads better than the rubbish built into most flatscreen TV's.

Try Loewe - they look and sound quite good, but not cheap

Choice magazine (an Australian consumer magazine) recons Sony sound better than the rest.

or you could buy, for example, the small logitech system which plugs in as mentioned above and you velcro it to the sides of the TV. Looks fine and the sound is sooo much better. I thnk I saw it for $100.

Hmmm, I have a newish Sony Bravia, great picture, very ordinary sound. If it's the best going the rest must be pitiful.

Panasonic. I think my TX-32LXD700 sounds very good by TV audio standards. One of the reasons I chose that model was for its well rated sound quality.

No nasty plastic/honky cabinet noise and it's nice and clean throughout the frequency range. Music sounds arguably better in the SRS surround sound setting. The other (simulated) surround sound setting is awful.

i'll second the loewe comment. great sound for a tv but a large wedge of cash.

The big fault I have with plazma TVs are they are HOGS on electricity. Read somewhere that LCDs are about double the electricity of the old TVs. But Plazmas are about 4 times an LCD.

I have my kit next to the TV so listen thru that.

Loewe?

After our experience with two £1500 32" LCDs from them last year I wouldn't go near another. We bought a £750 Panasonic eventually, wiped the floor with the Loewe in every way, especially sound!
The dealer even seemed to accept that Loewe weren't what they were with CRTs, and the salesmen push useless features that make the picture worse. Yuk.

I have'nt thought about the computer speakers on my LCD. Excellent idea. I was looking for a decent "soundbar" that's easily placed in front of the TV (still standing on a homemade "tv trolly" on weels). Problem is that these soundbars are usually wider than our 26" tv.
Investigating computer speakers I slowely moved to small active speakers which I can hang on either side of the trolly.
Anyone using these in combo with a tv?

OK, seems all LCDs are naff soundwise. Can anyone recommend a good sat/sub combo to flesh the sound out?
Only priviso(s) are it must be discrete (ie small) and work with the TV volume control so press mute on the tv remote and it mutes the output to the speakers?
