Shawn Colvin - Live
Posted by: woodface on 28 November 2006
I went to see Sawn Colvin last night at the Memorial Hall in Sheffeild and she was absolutley fantastic! It was just her and an accoustic guitar, plus an absolutley amazing voice. She did an incredible cover of Crazy by Gnarles Barkley; it shouldn't have worked but was a revelation! Unfortunatley I know realise that my CD player in no way does her justice; more expense in the offing!

You don't need too much of a CD player for Live '88 to shine.

Yep Steve is right re Live 88. There is also quite a few "live" recordings of her out there that are as good if not better than Live 88.

Steve,
I can't mention the site on here as I would probably get banned but the latest on the go is Live in Gent 24/11/06

Shawn Colvin is a consummate musician ... both as singer and guitarist, and she can do it live as easily and naturally as breathing. One of the greatest ever.

Seen her live several times, and much prefer her solo and acoustic. She seems to get overwhelmed by being in a band, particularly if Leventhal is in it.
Was at her London Bloomsbury gig in September and she was great. Shame that her career is on the slide, and I doubt if the new album will help. Pretty weak collection of songs compared to her best.

My wife and I went to see Shawn at The Lowry the other weekend. Many would have abandoned the gig. She had a cold; the roadie dropped her guitar; she had tuning problems all night; the monitors were eventually killed cos they were poor and she abandoned the set list six songs in for requests.
Now, as Fred Simon may recall from many moons ago, I am no fan of Whole New You and my listening to These Four Walls has been limited but I was similarly unimpressed. Then I saw her live and frankly not only was it a reminder of what a great live act she is but it also brought the new album to life for me. I've gone back and whilst it isn't in the class of her first three albums it is absolutely her best since then. If we could just get rid of that last cover version.
Oh, and yes, the cover of Crazy was absolutely stunning.

Hi Mike, I recall she had tuning problems at the Sheffield gig also, I don't think she trusted the auto-tuner. Overall, it is a lot to ask of a performer when it is just them and an accoustic guitar, it would have been, perhaps, more seemless if she had some accompaniament from another guitarist? I actually really like 'A whole new you' and really enjoyed it when I had a couple of listens prior to the gig. The new one is good, but perhaps a little too one paced?

Start with either the Live 88 if you like solo acoustic or Few Small Repairs if you like a band sound. Then Steady on and following that Fat City as well as These Four Walls. Then for the serious collector Cover Girl and Hold On.

A good starting point is Steady On, followed in quick succession by A Few Small Repairs and Live 88. And then Whole New You, These Four Walls, and Cover Girl.
