Jacqueline du Pre Boxed Set

Posted by: droodzilla on 30 October 2007

I saw this in Virgin today:

Du Pre Box

Very reasonably proced, but will it be any good?

I'm only familiar with her Elgar cello concerto.

17 discs of J. du Pre for £22 - how bad can it be Smile

I have her three disc 'best of on EMI' and it is great.

I have her rather fine Beethoven cello sonatas with Barenboim (which I assume are in the box), live form an Edinburgh festival concert not to mention their piano trios, with the addition of Zuckerman (though they're less compelling). Still, as Ian say, at that price you can't go far wrong.

Personally, I would caution against a 17 cd box set of ANYONE'S music! How much cello can you take?!!! Eek

Arrived on my doormat yesterday morning...
This is very nice from amazon for only £4.97 : )

Haydn. Cello Concerto no. 1 in C
Haydn. Cello Concerto no. 2 in D
Boccherini. Cello Concerto in B flat

JDP with the English Chamber Orchestra @ 1967

~<>~

I saw the 17 CD Set of JDP and wondered about it
myself.. Amazon is very sparce on infomation with
this collection, if it's all sonatas then you'd
end up with a cello shaped head if you played it
all in one go : > but I suppose it does include
orchestras, concertos, quartets etc ?

Every EMI classic CD i've come across lately is very well produced so this new 17 CD set is on
my wish list : )

this is a no brainer, I remember buying her Elgar Cello Concerto with Sir John Birobolli (sp?) in San Francisco for US$16.99 a while ago. Since then I have bought a couple of her box sets including the Beethoven Sonata set and the "Introduction to Jacqueline Du Pre". I just cannot get tired of her playing, I must have, oh, 3-4 different CDs with her Elgar and at least as many Dvorak.

If I see it locally I would definitely buy it sight unseen.

yeah I ordered it too - thanks for the partial contents ROTF.

Didn't need much persuading - I bought it today, and have been enjoying the first couple of CDs for most of the evening.

I just pulled the trigger on this too. I have a couple of here EMI sessions but this, at £22 from Amazon was too hard to pass up.
Now what else can I sell on eBay.....

This mega set arrived last week and what a delight it is. Enjoying the beautiful Brahms cello sonatas (disk 13!) at the moment.

OK talked me in to it.

Just wrapping up that Bach Concertos set for Mrs Sloop's birthday, so Christmas (or part of it anyway) may be sorted with this set.
