PJ Harvey

Went to see PJ Harvey last night as part of the Manchester International Festival, and what a show it was. The only disappointment was that it was quite short......played for 1 hour then 20 minute encore.
I've got most of her records......I think theres one rare one that i don't have, and was wondering it there are other forum members who are aware of her and their thought on her material.

Stories from....is one of my favourite albums but my favourite song of hers is Who Will Love Me Now ? which I think was recorded as part of a film soundtrack. Would love to see her live sometime.

Glenda,
I saw her support the Red Hot Chili Peppers a while ago now at a festival in Scotland. It didn't really come across too well and sound was awful, but last night was simply mesmerising.
Her first record Dry is still my favourite but I don't think she's done a bad one. The last one UhUh Her didn't have amaxing standout tracks but was consistently good all the way through.
The new tracks played last night were done on the piano (which she has apparently just learned to play) and sounded very haunting and beautiful. The new record is out in September...it'll be on pre-order as soon as.

Dry must be up there with the all time greatest debut albums.
Such raw visceral power, akin to Hendrix Experience's "are you experienced".
Hendrix for me never got near again and Polly Jane hasn't quite managed it either. Maybe that's what makes these albums so good though there are just a once off rush.

SJB,
you're probably right, but i think Rid of Me is a fantastic record as is To Bring You My Love. And live they all came across brilliantly.....although it helps when she opened with Oh My Lover and Dress, 2 of my favourite tracks.

Polly will play the Royal Festival Hall in London on Saturday, 29th September. The show will coincide with the release of the new album 'White Chalk' and will be her first London show since September 2004 when she played the Hammersmith Apollo.
On Saturday night in Manchester, Polly returned to the stage with an intimate performance at a sold-out Bridgewater Hall. Described by the NME as 'a spectacular live return', the solo career-spanning show included material from the new album; namely The Devil, White Chalk, Silence & The Mountain.
Tickets go on-sale on Wednesday morning at 9am from the following outlets:
Venue 0871 663 2500
See 0207 403 3331
Stargreen 0207 734 8932

Diccus,
were you there? TYhe NME review is spot on and the new songs were extremely haunting.
Wil check out to see if more shows are being added. As far as venues go I can heartily recommend the Bridgewater Hall....the sound is brilliant.

Would love to see her (never have) but only if she came further North

Polly Jane was born in Yeovil and brought up on a small sheep farm in nearby Corscombe in Dorset. Her father was a stonemason and her mother an artist (sculptor). Her parents gave her a diet of John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix and Captain Beefheart - but she rebelled against it and listened to U2, The Police, Soft Cell, Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, but please don't hold that against her as she's very nice really.
As she grew up Polly Jane became a big fan of Television (the group that did Marquee Moon, not the haunted fish-tank in the corner of the room). She did not buy lots of Patti Smith albums and people who say she sounds like Patti Smith (as did one recent poster elsewhere in this music room <insert embarrassed smiley> ) are described by Polly Jane as lazy.
Well there's lots more one could write about Polly Jane, but just listen to one her albums like Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea and you'll see why everybody seems to like her.
Kate Rusby she's not, but Polly Jane Harvey she most certainly is - and to answer your question, munch, she's not Alex Harvey's daughter ....... Next.

Munch,
i urge you to try them. Start with dry, her debut and stil one of the most brilliatn debuts in my experience. Great songs and a raw feeling.
Can raise goose bumps in a second. After that any record you choose from her discography is good. SOngs from the City....is a more commercial release and won teh mercury music prize. It has a great colloboration with Thom Yorke (track & on cd).

A little late coming into this post, but better late than never.
I first listened to PJ Harvey when she appeared with Nick Cave on the track "Henry Lee" from "Murder Ballads". The video to this is superb, and was shot in just one take. The chemistry between the two is magical. If you haven't seen this video, then I recommend tracking it down.
I also thought her appearances on the Jools Holland "Louder" videos was superb as well. For me she was up there with the best of all the Jool's videos.
I only have two of her CD's, "To bring you my love" and "Stories from the city, stories from the sea" Both of which I really enjoy.
Anyway, This thread has re-ignited my interest of Polly, and I would now like to try some of her earlier recordings. I think "Dry" will now be my next purchase.
PS Ryan, the other thread you started on Gomez has had a similar effect on my. I'm now catching up on their catalogue
Reading these posts has certainly made me want to go out and listen to a lot more music. Or could this be the outcome of purchasing my new Naim system?
Regards,
Martin

Glad we share a similar taste Marti. You cannot go wrong with Dry. I also stated in the GOmez thread that I too was buying much more music partly due to the forum and partly due to the hifi.
we'll probably bump into each other in Acoustica at some point too. I've got Geoff on my case trying to sell me a 282.......i won't give in, I won't give in......
