Betty Lavette anyone?

Stumbled accross her on a compilation, singing let me down easy. Sounds fantastic. Anyone else heard of her?

Still going strong, made a great record last year on Anti. Produced by Joe Henry, a favourite of mine who seems to specialise in reviving old soul stars(Solomon Burke). Called 'I've got my own hell to raise' Highly recommended!

"Bettye LaVette's new album is called "The Scene of the Crime" and it was co-produced by David Barbe, myself and Bettye.
For this record we took her back to Muscle Shoals (hence the title) where she was backed up by members of Drive-By Truckers along with my dad (David Hood) and legendary keyboardist Spooner Oldham.
Work on this album led directly to Spooner's current involvement with DBT.
We recorded it at the legendary FAME Studios there (where we had recorded much of The Dirty South).
I am extremely proud of this album and can't wait for it to come out."

The above is from Patterson Hood, leader of the Drive-By Trukers. Patterson's dad is David Hill (bass player), part of the original Muscle Shoals organization.

Sorry, Patterson's dad is David Hood, not Hill as I mistyped. Sorry

Jeff,

Is this the same David Hood who played on the Traffic - On the Road album in 1973?

Apparently so, from a link at DBT website:

Nice spot, Denis! The music universe is so small sometimes, and quality begets quality (when it is to our individual likings).

Cheers guys, I'll be sure to check out her new album. The song that ignited this search was from a funky soul album. I would really like to delve into this genre. any recommendation?????

I know little to nothing about that genre, but looking at the discography in the above David Hood link might get you started. Aretha and Percy and early Muscle Shoals seem to fit the request.

Hi Ryan

I subscribe to several podcasts each week and the LaVette download was a link on one of the station's pages. WXPN-Philadelphia, KEXP-Seattle,NPR-All Songs Considered, and KUSP-Santa Cruz are all great stations for music and have exposed me to numerous great artists.

At the moment I am listening to a band named Bishop Allen on KEXP Aug 23 podcast - good stuff.

Also, check out www.daytrotter.com for lots of downloads of new music - try The Long Winters, one of my current faves.

well i got Bettye's new album - scene of the crime. Absolutely fantastic production. One of the best albums I've heard. Even better than her last - which was over the top in places. The music is good and there are some crackers - but musically i prefer her last album at present. But the thing with all her albums, for me they really grow on you.

If you haven't heard her anything from her and you love female vocals with real hurt and soul - i mean real emotion then check her out - she is fab.
