Frank's best albums IMHO are his early ones - try We're Only In It For The Money [In a few week's time Mobile Fidelity are releasing a remastered copy of this] or Absolutely Free (Brown Shoes Don't Make It). In his later catalogue I really like Uncle Meat (Dog Breath and King Kong are just superb) and Weassels Ripped My Flesh (My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama, Oh No and Orange County Lumber Truck - three tracks in row merge into one of the best sequencess of songs ever). Hot Rats with some vocals by the good Captain (Beefheart, not Sensible) is also superb.

Moving on to when Frank met the Turtles and did 200 Motels (strange album and stranger film) - we have Live at the Filmore. Which is OK - although Frank is rather scathing about his own discovery "Alice Cooper", who was my hero when I was at school back in the 1960s.

Then we get jazzy and its the Waka Jawaka and the Grand Wazoo - which are OK - very polished. As Frank said "Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny".

Back on form Frank gave us Overnite Sensation - a great album. The Apostrophe which is almost as good. Did Frank invent Rap (well nobody is perfect, but at least Frank did with style - I Am The Slime)

Then I lose track a bit, but did pick up You are What You Is (which I like) and Too Late To Save a Drowning Witch (which I'm uncertain about).

Hawk - it depends what musical style you like as Frank tried 'em all. As Edgar Varesse would say "The Present Day Composer Refuses To Die". So I'd go for We're Only It It For The Money (Mobile Fidelity).

Actually I think that's the only Zappa album I've ever owned now I come to think of it!

As well as being the best live guitarist I've ever seen on stage *Hammersmith many moons afore' , I did have about half a dozen of his albums if I recall as part of a large mixed an varied collection of other stuff too, my favourite of his being 'Studio Tan' for what it's worth, innit Big Grin

I just love the wonderfully weird 'The Torture Never Stops' from 'Zoot Allures'.

FZ at his whacky, twisted best.

John.

As a pointer (Which I'm sure you all know already ?). In Riga after the fall of Communism, the town statue of Lenin was replaced by a large one of Our Frank (pointy beard and all) that being the place his parents originated from I believe, innit Big Grin

Bad news for anyone who was planning to go to the "Zappa plays Zappa" gigs later this year - they've been cancelled... no official reason, but I'm really disappointed... Frown

John I think its for the best.

At the end of the day there was only one Zappa, I never felt his kids could do music so I fear they may have slaughtered it.
