Serious Mains Upgrade...

Posted by: Tim Danaher on 01 October 2002

...probably the most serious it's possible to get.

Some of you may have read on the forum about the mains oddness that we've been having lately(surges and brownouts and powercuts). Anyway, Western Power have replaced the old substation causing all the oddness with a brand new, shiny one, and f***k me, if I haven't seen an amazing increase in clarity and detail and reduction in 'mush'. It feels like I just got a NAC 52!! The substation is also only 150 metres from my house, which I suppose must help...

Cheers,

Tim

The difference is probably due to a Mana support underneath the substation!

You torched the old one didn't you?

Congratulations on the mains getting better in your area, btw. What area of Wales do you live in? Up here in Wrexham I've not experienced the sort of things you mention.

Marco.

Marco -- I live in Wales' newest city' (yawn) Newport. Ever heard the saying "You can't polish a turd"?

Anyway, quite a few streets around here had equipment wrecked and Western Power have been running around doling out compensation by the bucketload. My system was untouched, but of course this had to happen in the week that Naim launched the NAP 300. StephenH -- 'Never mind about torching the substation -- I was severely temped to torch my system...

Cheers,

Tim

Marco,

yes, there is RF type crud deposited on the mains by city types, but I understand that farm machinery is notorious for adding harmonic distortion and voltage/current phase anomolies onto the mains.

This latter tends to cause transformer hum, too.
