Ebay Help/Question
Posted by: Big Brother on 19 November 2006
Hello Fellow Groupies,
I have just a brief question.
Asked a seller on Ebay a question about a part for my turntable, and he offered to end the auction early, offering me a reasonable price.
My question is, doesn't this go against the Ebay rules, and if not, would the buyer(me) be protected on Ebay ? The auction looks legit and seller has 100% feedback.
If not, would this offer disqualify the item, If you were me, from being bid on in the regular auction.
Thanks in advance

the question is: canyou pick up the item by yourself? i am really cautious about buying hifi stuff on ebay and have been conned (by a dealer!) in the past - auction or not.

Not likely for a pick up, since the item is in UK and I'm in the US. Only reason I'm tempted, is that it is rare to find this part anywhere but Ebay, and even then...

Please post the link to the auction and people can look and see if it contains any red flags.

Looks kosher enough. He's probably trying to balance the probability of geeting more from leaving the auction running vs a higher
buy it now" price.
The top plate does not have the additional bolt by the motor of the later models.

If the auction is pulled and you buy direct from the seller it is a private transaction between you and the seller. There is nothing wrong with pulling an auction, particularly if the seller indicates that the item is for sale elsewhere. The seller will avoid the final value fee and can pass that saving on. If you feel concerned, why not ask for the seller's number and call them? The 2p a minute is well worth it.
There is always an element of trust if you cannot collect in person. I recently sent some speaker plugs to a fellow forum member in Croatia and in return got an E10 note wrapped up in old pages from hifi news. Great fun.

Have you checked out the price of a new part?
Also the springs and grommets are effectively consumables, and frequently (usually?) replaced in a full service, because they can go a bit slack. They are fairly inexpensive new.

New top Plate: 218.00 USD fron Linn US, in Florida. No local dealers in my area (Linn or Naim!!)
I am keen to get an older sample as I plan to use it on an older (circa 1976) LP12. The synergy should be better than with new . The Lp12 has no corner braces, so there would be no place to fasten the extra bolt.
Have built Lp12's from spare parts before, I seem to gravitate towards the older parts, dunno why.
