Cheats prosper (Again!)

Posted by: nicnaim on 25 March 2006

Following Eric's lead in another thread, I was tempted to have a whinge about Chelsea the other day after the Newcastle match. As I am hardly impatial regarding The Toon I let it pass.

After listening to the radio reports earlier, I thought I would judge with my own eyes regarding the latest reports on Chelsea's misdemeanours on MOTD. Having now seen it, they have yet again proved what a cheating bunch of bastards they are.

The other night Drogba should have picked up a second yellow card for diving (simulation), and been sent off. If he had, the result may have possibly been different.

I know I am clutching at straws, because Chelsea have so much talent they should not need to cheat. The fact that they still do, and are completely un-embarrassed to admit it, really grips my shit!

Rant over.

Jamie,

You view is myopic in the extreme, or are you just having a bad day?

Mourinho started as a breath of fresh air, but has subsequently proved to be a bad sport and a terrible loser.

You and he obviously get your contact lenses from the same place as Arsene Wenger gets his specs.

Chelsea winning the league again, will sadly be tainted by the way they have done it.

Mike,

Agreed Man U looked awesome tonight. I've always respected Giggs as not only is he a great talent, but he seems to be above the antics of a number of his team mates i.e. he does not cheat.

Mike,

Having seen Ronaldo perform against England in Portugal during the semi finals of Euro 2004, from a front row seat near the halfway line, when he fell down everytime anybody came near him, I remain a little sceptical.

Watching a game from that vantage point, allows you to see a lot more than you ever get to see on TV.

Do not get me wrong, he is a great talent, but why simulate. For instance George Best and Pele kept on running, and beating players despite being hacked to death. Admittedly that was from a different era, but you get my drift.

Regards

This is a fuss about nothing and people should stop picking on Chelsea.

They are a lovely cuddly team with a coach who clearly never encouraged his players at Porto to dive - look at the EUFA Cup Final against Celtic for example. A finer example of sportsmanship you never will see.

I didn't see the Fulham game but I thought it was interesting that the "goal" was disallowed for hand ball at Fulham but allowed at Stamford Bridge.

Rob "give me my ball back or I'll cry" Stiles is nowhere near the being the worst referee in the Premiership, but the general level of competence is unfortunately far too low.

Of course I'm biased towards Man Utd whenever I'm watching any game but it is actually laughable the number of decisions the refs and their "assistants" get wrong.

There is no bias, no cheating ... they just get things wrong but from the referee's perspective they actually think they got it right.

My seat is quite high up at Old Trafford so I get an overview rather than a side on or low level view but I always look at he linesman to see what decision that they have made.

If the ref has made and signalled a decision it is very rare for the linesman to go against it. Indeed the number of times that you think the linesman is going to make a decision (whether right or wrong) and he looks at the referee and gets the impression that the ref will take a different view the linesman then succumbs to the ref's perceived will - he waits for the ref to make a decision and then just agrees with with it!

Having said that I do believe that there can be an element of "evening up" a decision. This can depend on whether the ground has a big screen or a general crowd reaction but I have seen "penalties" not given to even up a perceived mistake made earlier by the referee.

How about a small wager that the Scousers beat Chelski 1 - 0 in the FA Cup Semi- Final and Chelski don't get awarded a nailed on penalty when Drogba goes to ground!

Chris

PS T P-M I think that it is rule 17 in the United supporters handbook that essentiallly says that as a United supporter you never ever ever refer to the team as ..... <what you wrote> [I can't write it as it would be wrong!!!]

Chris,

You make some good and amusing observations, but
Chelsea set themselves up for the criticism by their own actions. Mourinho's defense of Drogba yesterday saw his credibility slip yet further in my eyes.

There is no doubt that officials get things wrong, they are human after all, but it is made all the harder by the play acting and cheating that goes on. It is that that sticks in the throat, and the sooner it is stamped on the better.

Yes there is sometimes an element of evening up decisions, and although it would be poetic justice if Drogba was not awarded a nailed on penalty, it still would not be right. He has shown that he is big, strong and powerful, and can score some cracking goals without cheating.

Do not forget that the crowd can also play a big part in generating an atmosphere where refs are intimidated, Mark Halsey being a prime a prime candidate.

How many years was it before a penalty was awarded to the opposition at Old Trafford, ten? Winker

I'm glad I do not have to make your round trip to each home game, I can walk to SJP in twenty minutes Big Grin .

The traffic was awful last night as the M6 was full of more Londoners than usual! I got home far later than was good for me at work today.

Teddy got a great ovation. He deserves it.

The West Ham fans were superb throughout the game - as usual.

My favourite bit of crowd banter was when the Stretford End encouraged the supporters in the new North West Tier 2 Quadrant to give them a song - and spontaneously they did!

Back on the cheating thing - I like the idea that the ref asks (eg) Drogba "Did you handball/dive/both simultaneously?"

If he says "Yes" he gets a yellow card for cheating.

If he says "No" he gets a red card (or technically two yellows) for cheating and lying

Too many players are allowed/encouraged to cheat because of money etc. It is a bit rotten when you watch your own poor-footie/too-much-free-cash side resorting continually to the Robben-Drogba etc routines.

Although I would be happier if useless Chelsk played well-fairly-scored goals, probably it's better for everyone if they don't.

Possibly Chelsk will get ball all the way over Liver goal-line, but they'll all need mind-body transplants first.
