Budget 2008 VED Charges Question

Posted by: J.N. on 14 March 2008

The relevant documentation on page 123/124 here refers to the 'New first year VED' from 1st April 2010.

Will this higher charge only apply to newly registered cars in 2010 or existing ones too?

John.

Everytying registered after 1 March 2001 (as it says on the page you refer to) - so backdated, unlike the increases announced a year ago. This stinks, actually - cannot be anything to do with encouraging people to drive lower emitting cars as those cars have alreadfy been built. It's just an excuse to tax motorists more. If the government was serious about emissions they'd tax domestic fuel much more highly. Motorists are just taxed as an easy target

Cats don't remove CO2 AFAIA so the amount coming out can be taxed.

which is closely related to the amount of fuel poured into the tank - the number of miles it takes to convert the fuel to CO2 is immaterial - it is how many gallons/litres etc that is used that counts.

Why should a 'low emision' vehicle that does 100,000 miles a year pay less VED than a 'dirty' vehicle which does less than a tenth of that?

There is a petition on the Downing Street web site lobbying for the abolition of VED. I doubt the government will read it, or if read, take any notice of it, but views can still be voiced.

The Government needs/wants your money - c'mon how else can they fund cabinet ministers' expense accounts and lavish life styles? If they didn't tax car fuel then they'd tax something else; it is vital the Government raises taxes to keep their Ministers in the comfort they are accustomed to. Government is an expensive job, after all the wall paper alone in the lord chancellor's office costs around £6k a roll and somebody has to foot the bill - so why not us?

All governments are corrupt, but some are more corrupt than others.
