New Turn Table
Posted by: Jerryl on 18 November 2003
Hi All,
I presently have 112, 150 driving Wilson Benesch ARC speakers.
I would like to replace my Dual 506TT, I also decided I can not live with a fully manual TT, as it is being regularly.
The unit I'm looking at is Thorens 295MKIII.
Has anyone had any experience with it?

Hi Jerry,
Welcome to the forum.
I had an old Thorens turntable for many years and I was very happy with it. I used it with a 42-5/110 and a pair of Linn Sara's and it didn't disappoint.
I eventually replaced it with a Roksan Xerxes.
Regards

Jerry,
You may want to try posting an enquiry over on the Vinyl Engine Forum - http://www.nakedresource.com/phpBB2/index.php
There's a dedicated Thorens room on there where you should find a greater concentration of Thorens users than on here. You could also try the PinkFish Forum, but most over there are Linn/Rega activists, so I reckon VE is your best bet.

Jerry,
I don't know what your budget is but maybe you should investigate the Wilson Benesch TT to go with your Arcs. Not a criticism, but those Arcs are seriously revealing speakers given the rest of your system.
Cheaper decks which I've either heard or have had great reviews include various Regas, Notts Analogue, the New Roksan and Michell.
Second Hand LP12s are still a bargain, with a Naim Aro stuck to them preferably.
My deck of choice would be the Well Tempered Record Player, Dynavector 17D2 cart and P75 phono stage but that combo would set you back 3K. Nonetheless, the Arcs would suddenly take off.
Do you use a CD player?

Hi Jerryl,
Usually, it is difficult to find a fine sounding (semi-) automatic TT. I believe Pro-Ject has semi-automatic TTs which stop at the end of the album. Pro-ject is offering excellent value for money! If you are after a fully automatic TT, I think you should have a look to the Denon TTs. You don't hear a lot about them, I even don't know if they are available in Europe (I am from the Netherlands), but they are very reliable (in my home office I am still using a Denon DP-51F from the early 80's quite intensively) and sound is good.
But above all: let your ears decide!
Cheers,
JP

Sorry Jerry, I missed the automatic bit. Use your hand to help your ears I say.
