looking for Hammond organ CD's
Posted by: urs on 28 August 2006
Hello
I like the sound of the hammond organ very much, and I am looking for recommendations for CD's.
I like rock and jazz-music, and I am familiar with Jimmie Smith, Keith Emerson ...
Does anyone has any ideas of great hammond organ CD's
regards
urs

But seriously, what exactly is your beef with me? When have I ever impugned you personally as you have me?
By the way, I'm well aware of Young's Blue Note sides, etc. The phrase "best known for" (and I did use the qualifier "probably") means simply "most widely known for" ... it has nothing to do with the relative quality of the music (although I like it all ... Prestige, Blue Note, Lifetime, whatever). If you polled a hundred random people, sadly, most wouldn't even know who Young was. Of those who would, it's most likely that they would know of Lifetime. That's all I meant. ROTF asked for info about Young, and I gave a quick capsule sketch, and I did mention many of the other artists he worked with besides Tony.
But I think you already understood all that, yet used it, nonetheless, as a platform to slag me, for what reason I have no idea. What's that "crown" and "the likes of you" shit all about, anyway? Like the kids these days say, you don't know me.
Fred
First of all, as God is my witness, I came to this board for the honest discussion and helping people as I'm very passionate about jazz. I don't know you or the others and the same way you don't know me. But I hate it when somebody, when replying to me, is taking some phrases out of context, interpreting and making assumptions, as you did previously (now, see, you don't like it either).
Now, what I first did is politely ask you not to correspondence with me. It's all documented here. And yet, you continued to do things your way, which makes me think you definitely have some "beef" with me. That's basically it.
I realize now that I've made a mistake by coming here, since I honestly thought there could be fans dedicated exclusively to jazz (like at AAJ's or JazzCorner's forums where I post occasionally), and there aren't. Not in the negative way, simply folks here are mostly into classical and pop, which is great too. It's just not my cup of tea, and from now on I'll restrain myself from posting here at the Music Room.
Regards

Urs, I'm glad you asked. I give my highest recommendation to Larry Goldings, who I think is one of the very best musicians on the planet. I suggest these three albums:
Moonbird![]()
Sweet Science![]()
As One![]()
They're all organ trio (Bill Stewart on drums, Peter Bernstein on guitar, Larry on organ, hands and feet) and all brilliant ... eminently musical, smart, tuneful and modern, with a lot of heart and soul.
These are exactly what you're looking for.

Hi Fred
I found a great double ECM CD yesterday, that came out this year.
It is called saudades, with
Larry Goldings
John Scofield
Jack de Johnette
As I was reading in the booklet, it was Tony Williams idea to form a new Lifetime. He could not realize that, as we now. So this trio brings it all back together.
I'm sure you like this one.

Hi Urs,
Yes I have Saudades and really dig it.
But I actually prefer the three Goldings sides (plus his most recent album Quartet, on which he plays some organ but mostly piano ... it's a stunner) because of the compositional factor. Plus, his trio with Bernstein and Stewart was a regular working trio, and there are advantages inherent in that.
Have you had the chance to dig them yet?

Fred-
not sure about the trouble with Turd . . . I mean trane, is over. But I have always valued, and do enjoy reading your posts.
(I think he's been locked up in his room a little too long. Poor thing.)
Just checked out "Moonbird" and will definitely be picking it up. As always, thanks for the recommendation.

Urs,
There's a compilation album on the Blue Note label called Heroes of the Hammond which has some great stuff on it - Grant Green, Jimmy Dorsey etc. This is a good place to start and should give you some idea of what to explore next.
Hope this helps,
Rich

Why would you try reviving that unpleasant subject in such an immature way? What possible good could ever be achieved by that? Do you really think this made a positive contribution? Why bother revisiting an issue that has long been resolved? And why is the moderator asleep at the wheel and doesn't stop this?
Sad.

What about Martin, Medeski & Wood? There's a compilation called (I think) 'Last chance to trance dance' which has got some pretty groovy hammond moments and might be a good place to start.
Gee, I just hesitated to press the 'Post' button in case I get a torrent of abuse.
