We May Have A Traitor In Our Mdst

Posted by: DAVOhorn on 03 March 2005

Dear All

So there i was relaxing in my warm pit at the end of another interesting day in the service of our fellow man (NHS) reading the April edition of Car Magazine.

I turned over the page to find it was the letters page.

And there in a beautiful piece of english prose was i believe the words of a certain Dr Bruce Woodhouse of Yorkshire fame.

How dare he write a letter on a subject other than that of our chosen recreational past time .

The listening to of music on fine HiFi systems.

I feel that this btrayal should mean that future posts should be censored.

I must appologise too for i was reading Car Magazine and not reading a review of NAIM gear in a HiFi magazine.

Damn.

I thought the Kyoto agreement was that the rest of the world cleaned up its act so that those Damned Yankees can carry on driving their 38 wheeler SUVeeees.

One of the big truck manufacturers is now making a 7 Ton Suv based on a short chassis 4 wheeler truck.

And i mean truck.

it might be Peterbilt.

This is taking the

MY DICK IS BIGGER THAN YOUR DICK TO NEW EXTREMES.

Stil you might need 400 bhp and 1200 lbft to haul the average American Citizen and his family around.

At first glance I thought the title of this thread was:-

quote:
We May Have A Tractor In Our Midst

I could have sworn I saw a John Deere rumbling up the road on the way home from work tonight.... Eek

David,

If you check his website, you'll find he hasn't sold any yet. When (if) he does, considering all the anti-terrorist extras he offers, I'm betting he'll attract more middle-eastern oil magnates than portly American rednecks.

Regards,

a thinner-than-average American

It's a fair cop. I wrote it to wind up my brother who is a senior Ford production exec/mamager/something. It worked.

Bruce

BTW- Is it just me or has Car gone down the shute? It should stop trying to ape TopGear with the smart-alec asides and poor photography. Im more of an EVO man myself really, at least they have a Caterham on the fleet they use all year round.

I'd agree with you on the drop in quality of Car Magazine. I've bought just about every issue since 1985 but yesterday as I was about to pick up the April issue in WH Smiths I felt the tide turn. After I flipped through the magazine and noted the content I replaced it in the rack. Over the past half dozen issues I've found that there is less and less that I find of interest and this reached an all time low with the current issue.

I blame the editor Jason Barlow. I couldn't stomach him when he presented Top Gear. Former editor Gavin Green should be re-instated and the photographers should stop trying to be too arty and abstract.

Back in WH Smiths, what did I choose instead of Car Magazine?

Bike Magazine, of course!

Since you recently revealed on PFM the shocking truth about your taste in Star Trek movies, I recommend this excellent movie: The Straight Story. I must warn you, though, that although it's U-rated it involves a scene of extreme cruelty to a John Deere tractor.

Wow - a 300 mile ride on a lawnmower?? Thank you Jeremy, it does indeed look like torture. I will have to check it out...... Big Grin

Dear Bruce,

I agree Car Magazine has become an also ran.

I still buy but mostly out of habit as i have been buying it since the 70's. Probably even early 70's when still at school.

I used to enjoy Leonard JK Setrights writings.

He now writes for HiFi World and Buys Linn gear.

So he is now beyond the pale.

I beleieve he is still smoking his Sobranie Black Russians, certainly he is pictured smoking in his photo in the mag.

Car has always prospered under Antipodean leadership so perhaps the mag should go to aus and find someone new.

One worrying aspect of current car mags is the high turnover of writers.

I subscribe to EVO which is currently the best general car mag.

Octane can be iteresting as Rowan Atkinson is a writer. But i was moved to put pen to paper ovet the poor articles on the Citroen SM and the wankel engine. Both worthy of much larger and more indepth articles than were in the mag.

It seems many mags are aiming for the short attention span of a no hoper audience rather than an educated informed enthusiast who has the where withall to buy the vehicles in the mags.

Octane has articles on watches and such stuff.

Which would be of interest if the other car articles were of better quality.

So a continued dumbing down of quality .

regards David

One quality well informed 'on location' posting from either Arye or our Mat, is worth a hundred plus of the rubbish I myself churn out willy nilly, or so it seems to me, innit.

An extraordinarily philosophical comment.

"Car and Driver" - Bill Morrissey
from "Standing eight" - 1989 - Philo records

"...now my Honda civic is a real go-geter
i look great in it in my crew neck sweater
My Bmw draws applause
i'm not bound by traffic laws
I've got a Ranger truck, i'm for import quotos
i won't park next to no Toyotas
And my Volvo wagon will seat six
it'll run on diesel or trail mix

I'll bet you a ten, even a fiver
You find the car, i'll find the driver
It really ain't no big deal
to know who's inside that automobile..."
