i-Pod Advice Sought

Posted by: J.N. on 20 November 2008

I've been trying to resist the purchase of an mp3 player to use with i-Tunes for a while, but am weakening.

A 16GB Nano appeals, as I only want to play music. A friend tells me that the i-Touch has better sound quality, but I simply don't want or need its more comprehensive facilities.

I can't get on with separate ear-bud type phones, and have a pair of Sennheiser PX100s (mini headband type) which are very good.

I'm also considering whether to buy a good pair of in-ear types, to reduce ambient noise (and thus use lower volume?). The Etymotic ER-6i seem to be well rated at around £70, but it seems that correct insertion and fit in the ear canal is critical to getting a good tonal balance.

Any advice from users would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

John.

The Etymotics are excellent with the iPod, having the correct sensitivity. I have found the soft silicon earpieces comfortable for prolonged listening. Best inserted with a screwing motion after moistening. Don't worry, you get used to the funny looks.

You may find 16Gb rather limiting if you get into ripping the larger file sizes like WAV. You probably think you won't, but the very fact that you are on this forum suggests that sound quality matters to you.

I could not use the "ear-bud" type headphones either. I use my MP3 player at the gym, and they just kept falling out. I use the ones that fit in the ear, but have an attachment that hooks over each ear. It keeps everything securely and comfortably in place, without the need for a headband.

I use the Etymotics every day on the train. They are not bad but I find on the odd track they break up a bit. Might be my rips that are not that high quality though causing that.

At first when I got them I did not like the in ear business and went back to my old phones but now that I am used to them, these are the only phones I use.

I have a 160Gb classic and I have filled it up just with music. If you are going to rip at high quality then it will not take long to fill up the smaller ipods.
