good gig, good al***

my girlfriend and i went with one of our friends to a gig in "spitz" off of commercial st. in E1 on friday night. the tickets were to see female singer songwriter "pina" whose debut album "quick look" came out a month or so ago.

it's a great little venue on the top floor of a pub / restaurant, with room for about 80 people (at a push).

i had no idea who was supporting, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the opening act. the chap's name was jacob golden, and he performed with just one other musucian on stage, playing the keyboards. he played guitar and sang himself, and after a fairly dull first song, the set really picked up. his voice sounds something like jeff buckley / thom yorke: a rich tenor voice with a soaring fallsetto. really impressive, and helped enormously by the intimacy of the venue.

pina played most of the tracks off of her debut album, strumming a stratocaster whilst singing, and was supported by a drummer and keyboardist. the set was great, but let down a little by the sound balance...drums too loud, voice to quiet. what is it with drummers?!

anyway...went out yesterday and picked up the jacob golden album "hallelujah world" which is very pleasant, although the songs don't come across as well as they did live. the pina album on the other hand sounded better on CD than during the live performance...

both albums are well worth checking out though...

cheers

thanks paul. will check it out.

if you like the album, do try to see him live, if you get the chance. his voice is actually a lot more powerful than it comes across in the recorded medium

cheers
