nDAC sync problem
Posted by: nitrous on 08 December 2010
Hi, just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this, it seems to have started after I installed the firmware update posted on another thread here.
Dac works happily for hours on TV say, and then switch to start playing cds (cd5xs) and after a few minutes looses sync. Disc is playing fine, pressing relevant input restores sync for a fraction of a second, then it is lost again. On swirching on and of restores working order.
This has happened half a dozen times now.
Any thoughts?

Happened to my DAC repeatedly during a day of low voltage on our home wiring. Investigation revealed an arcing knife-switch on one phase of the main breaker. Main breaker box replaced and music plays better than ever, lights are brighter and my DAC is in-sync (wan't that a boy-band ??)

No significant problems currently. I haven't done any upgrades.
I have had issues with the computer talking to the interface talking to the nDAC in the past (comes and goes) but that is usually my Mac being an Apple and knowing best (unplug, wait, reconnect, reset settings in Puremusic all works fine). Its more stable now than it has been in the past.

@Briz, You may have touched on something here, I have connected to one Dac input an Apple AE. And I have recently played with the direct streaming app from an iPad. I was wondering if the Ipad 'checks in' with the AE now and again when on but not streaming anything and that this triggers the DAC......I'll check this out later and see if I can get it to do it.

Hi, I have restarted this thread as my problems with the nDac have returned and most annoying they are too.
To recap, I had the above fault and was contact by Steve Hopkins and returned the Dac to HQ last Christmas. After about 4 weeks with them it was returned without a fault/cause found. I was told there was. Nothing wrong with it. But there is but only now and again. Problem is when problem is 'set off' sometimes the only thing that cures it is to turn it off for several days........a real nusiance as I run several mainsources through it, so this puts all of them out of action.
I cannot locate what sets this fault off, sometimes it just looses the sync in the middle of TV or AE from CD5xs.
I now have a work around that works until I have the down time to switch at all off for a day or so. This is to insert a known working usb with wav files and faff around to get it to play. Then stop it and undock BUT leave usb in place. NDac will now operate normally for days on end with usb in place.
Does ANYONE else have such an annoying nDac fault, or is it just me??

Loss of sync can be an indicator of loss of incoming data.
In view of the fact that Naim didn't find a problem, have you checked the cabling/connections.
Try different inputs with a proven cable/source to try and isolate the problem.
Take it one step at a time i.e. one source, one input at a time.
I lost sync. after connecting a 75ohm coax/bnc cable I'd made. Found a poor connection between the bnc pin and the cable core.
I don't think it's the issue but have you installed the latest firmware ?

I'd contact the factory again - but I'd also advise to try the unit without video sources, and see if there is a difference (poss DC on ground plane).

Graham, yep, should have said I am pretty handy with the basic stuff and have double checked all cables. I delibrately used just one 'wire' connection to Cd5xs. Rest are optical, including TV. Intention was very much to follow best earthing scenario. I did the firmwhare update originally before I sent it off goping this may help. I assume the factory did an full install when they had it. There was no work note or anything when I collected it.
David, yep it maybe another trip to the factory, but it still may not do it when they have it. In a way I wish it would get worse so it was apparant then we may stand a chance of finding out what it is.
Currently working fine...........
Fault can be triggered on any source.

Well fault back again after working fine for a week.
The only new bit of info to add is that when dac looses sync/signal and if you happen to be very close to unit, you can hear a mechanicl 'swoosh' sound from inside the dac. I had no idea there were moving parts inside a dac, but it definitely sound like a rely or switch....
Any thoughts anyone?

I had a similar problem earlier this year after a firmware upgrade. I spoke to my dealer, who loaned me their demo dac, while the machine was sent back to Naim.
It seemed that in my case the version of the boot loader in the dac was an older version and incompatible with the new firmware.
Anyway the trip back to HQ seemed to sort everything out.

Thanks rhr, mine looks like it will have to make a second visit to HQ, tonight's fault includes the rear USB now not working!
