Warning thieves are operating in your area...

Yes in your local postal sorting office, temporary staff are covering the Christmas period. Also some permanent staff may well take advantage of the seasonal post too.

If post is not registered at £5 a go then you are taking a chance on it arriving. Recorded is bugger all use, and may also flag up to thieves that there is value in the letter.

We have also been told that we currently have to wait 15 days for first class (next day supposedly!) recorded post to be considered lost, and that there is no compensation for anything contained in the post (valuables, money and jewelery - which pretty much means everything).

Most staff in the postal system do a great job, and under some appalling cuts that are making the job a misery to many, but there are a few who evidently know that they can hide in the system and steal to their hearts content.

So far this year we have had one item 'go missing', last Christmas, two. From now on most presents will be taken when we next see those we are giving to, or maybe just out money directly into their bank accounts.

Perhaps I am expecting too much, and I do remember Jack Dee putting complaining about the post in perspective 'First class is getting too expensive to send a letter? Here's forty one pence, see how far you get with that.'

I know that one member of the forum is a good hard working worker for the post office and I certainly do not wish to cast any negative views in their direction, I am just passing on my experiences of how a few rotten eggs can negatively affect the whole system.

I just received a regular packet of collated mail from my father (their address is the only one I use in the UK). It had been torn open, and was in a (French La Poste) plastic outer. The thing that was missing was my parents christmas card to me, which, knowing them, probably looked like such. It did have a cheque in it, but I imagine whoever took it was looking for cash.

However, given that the otherwise open envelope managed to retain a further three things in it prior to getting its French platsic bag, my speculation is that the culprit in this case (it was quite clearly ripped open, not 'damaged') is likely to be seasonal post worker in France*, so not just the Royal Mail.

Bah humbug

Rod

*The phrase 'worker in France' comes with all the usual caveats...

"Warning theives are opperating in your area..."

Probably a hoax - the 'Nigerian' spelling is a give-away.

That is the problem with not being able to edit posts for more than a few minutes when you realise that your typing was amiss.

Adam, please feel free to edit the thread title if you have the opportunity.

I can probably add another item that has not (yet) been delivered.

Thanks Adam and Richard, I should run a spell check on titles as well as messages.

Hi JamieL_v2
I don't know if you were refering to me as the member who works for the Post Office as the hard working bit threw me Winker but as to you not yet receiving any packets it might be because Royal Mail are trying to "deliver" Christmas mail on the cheap. I had an Amazon packet sent out last Thursday with their Prime service and that still hasn't arrived, they also sent out 3 more items yesterday through Prime and they haven't arrived either. They did send out a book yesterday with City Link and that did arrive today.
The main problems seem to be with the mail centres not processing the mail quickly enough, probably due to being staffed with part-timers and casuals and not having enough hours to do the job properly. For example today we didn't have that much mail or packets come to the delivery office despite the mail centre being completely full of letters and packets. We have heard that there are yorks of Amazon packets that have'nt been processed and I dare say that will apply to other online retailers also.We haven't yet received our pay slips that should have arrived last Thursday.

Not a very good picture painted of Royal Mail but then maybe this is what it wants as it makes the job of privatising it a little bit easier.
I hope this as been helpful but then again it probably hasn't been.

Where's Mr Crozier when you need him. Oh, he's at ITV.

Crozier (and his partner in crime Leighton) were the biggest thieves of them all. Goodbye to bad rubbish I say!

If you think it’s bad now, just wait until it’s Privatised!
The price of postage will double, the workforce will gradually get replaced with cheap labour (from anywhere in the world), and the profits before people culture will only please the executive managers [BIG bonuses for them!] along with the City and it’s very wealthy carpet bagging shareholders.
By then thefts in the postal system will have soured, and the people making the money won’t care when it’s no longer a public service, and there will be nothing we can do about it.

Very sadly i think this is all going to happen Frown

I think you are right Debs, TNT and UPS must be rubbing their hands with glee.

What Crozier will do to ITV I don't know, that said I am a little surprised it is still going as after the mess those like Charles Allen left it in.

I agree Debs, it's what you see everywhere they are 'privatising' public services.

And IMO it can't be anything else, private companies are only taking money out of the company for their top-salaries, bonuses and shareholder payments.
All this has to be paid for by increased consumer prices and reduced workstaff and lower quality.

Sad isn't it.

That'll go down the swannie then with Mr Completely Ridiculous Of Zero Integrity Executive Rubbish in charge ... why don't we raise income tax to 100% for these types in the hope they'll go abroad; I'm sure we could easily draw up a list of culprits.

There was a man who worked for the Post Office whose job was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses.

One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address. He thought he should open it to see what it was about.

The letter read:

Dear God,

I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension.
Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had £100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment.
Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you please help me?

Sincerely, Edna

The postal worker was touched.. He showed the letter to all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few pounds.

By the time he made the rounds, he had collected £96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman.

The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.

Christmas came and went.

A few days later, another letter came from the same old lady to God.

All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened.

It read:

Dear God,

How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me?
Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift.
By the way, there was £4 missing.
I think it might have been those thieving bastards at the post office.

Sincerely, Edna

Another package, posted last Tuesday (2nd class?) not here yet. I have my suspicions this might be added to the list of 'missing' packages, and by 'missing' I mean stolen.

It is hard to believe that there is not a thief working at the Leeds sorting office.

No disrespect to good, honest postal workers, just the fact of another missing package.

I've never had anything go amiss from the P.O. but a couple of times recently my packages from Amazon et al. have arrived bundled. I order over a period of days, but nothing arrives....and then a van turns up with a bundle of CDs. Which is a bit crap really, especially if the wife's there when they arrive, at which point I get an old-fashioned look while I try and dispose of the packaging evidence.

It's probably all in the name of efficiency, and I can imagine the growth in mail order must cause them great problems, but it's a bit pish all the same.

Jamie,

Write a letter of complaint to your nearest Delivery Office.

(Depending on where you are located it may be within a Mail Processing Centre)..

So send two letters:

cc - To the Mail Centre Manager (...of your "Local Postal Town" name)

cc - To the Delivery Office Manager (... of your "Local Postal Town" name)

No need for you to pay postage for this, it’s free because they go there anyway.

In your duplicate letters of complaint state as many facts of the dates of when missing items were actually posted and which class of postage used.

It would be useful if you have made notes of all these dates, they need to be as accurate as possible.

They can pass these details onto an internal investigation department.

Also, ask them to reply with an explaination of what they intend to do about it.

Debs

p.s. The 2nd class packet posted to you last Tuesday is about 3 or 4 days late so may turn up very soon.

Thanks Debs

I will have a few Ebay receipts, and a few others dates can be tracked down.

Maybe it will turn up, but it is just getting so that it is a lottery ordering things by post.

Jamie
