What next... Source, amp,system-supports?

Posted by: Alco on 22 May 2001

Hi guys,

I'm a happy bloke, with a very satisfying little system. But,...just like most of you guys, every once in a while, the upgrade-bug starts to bite..

At this moment I own a Nait-2/CD-3.5 + flatcap/Kan-ll's on Target HR60 stands/Nac-a5.

Whatta ya'guys think will be the best or most cost-effective upgrade.

- get me a decent system-support ?
- get me some Linn Kan-ll stands ?
- get me the s/h Nac-72/140 combination my dealer
is offering for 50% off newprice ?
- Trade in my CD-3.5+f/c for a s/h CDX at
another Naim-dealer and then also throw in my
Monitor-Audio Studio-2's.
(this will still cost me an arm and a leg, though!)

What would you guys do first..

Greetings,

I would go the pre-power route personally. Lots of upgrade potential here in future too. You might like to try the flat cap with the pre-amp, or better still have its own HiCap. In terms of cost-effective upgrades then system supports are good value but they will not take things up a whole class.

I love my CDX but within your system I wonder if it will really deliver the best value, especially as it needs XPS added to become truly special.

Time to visit a dealer and try the options...

Hoi Alco,

If I were in your shoes I would buy the 72/140.It will give you much more control over the speakers, wich are very good.Later you can take the Nait2 and swap it for a Hicap to feed the 72,that will give you even more control and after that.....

Good luck,Rob.

I also guess the biggest improvement would be the
72/140. If I would've some easy going speakers it would be a different matter.
I know the Kan's like some "kick in the butt" kinda amp,so I guess that's where to start.

I don't think I'll use the Nait-2 for a 2nd system though. I don't have a 2nd room,only a bedroom. I never really understood those people
with a 2nd expensive (Naim) system in their bedroom. I only (ehh..)sleep in my bedroom!
Why listen to music in your bedroom when you've got a serious sytem in the living-room?

O,btw, I could also get me 42.5/90 (old-style) combo for about 400 UKP)

Or,....would it be possible/wise to convert my Nait-2 into a pre-amp,and only buy the 140?

mmm, life can be tuff sometimes, making choices or
waiting patiently for better offers to come by.

Greetings,
Alco.

Hey,Rob

Nice to see there are Naimoholics who live in the same area as I do. I visit Groningen a lot.
For the music-lover there's so much more to enjoy in your town. live-music,more HiFi-stores,record-stores,etc.

I'm a little curious 'bout what kinda Naim-system you have and where you bought it?
Did you buy it at "Sound-Gallery", Groningen?
My Nait-2 was offered for only HFL 600,- (150 UKP) at "De Groef",in Groningen.
Bought my CD-3.5 at Sound-Gallery and my flatcap s/h from a Naim-forum member.
The Kan's I bought at "Rinsma" in Lippenhuizen.
He still has another pair of Kan-1's for HFL 1000,- (about 250 UKP).

well, see ya'

Greetings,
Alco.

I'd definitely consider keeping the Nait-2 for your 2nd (or bedroom) system! I've had a decent seperates hi-fi system in my bedroom for years now and it's a definite asset. In fact in our house the systems used most (in descending order of use) are:

1) AV system in the living room (moslty the rest of the family).
2) My bedroom system (with perhaps 25% on headphones)
3) Main Hi-Fi system in the study

The latest round of upgrades have left me with 2 spare Arcam CD players and 2 spare Arcam intergrated amps so I'm busy figuring out which rooms to add hi-fi to next (one set is definitely going in the dining room). Can anyone advise on appropriate speakers for a bathroom perhaps...

My system at the moment meridian506/72/flat/140/naca5/royd.

Bought the 140 in Roden by Art In Sound(traded it for a NAIT3).The speakers came from Rinsma also did the flatcap and the 72.
I'm happy with the system as it is but there is room for improvement (cd-player).The meridian is a little laid back on some music like Tool. But first I have to raise funds for other things such as a new camera and things like that. From profession I'm a photographer so...

Good luck,Rob.
