I have a Sony BDP-S500 Blu-Ray Player and it is quite slow to load modern films -- is it worth installing a firm-ware update.
The latest Batman film [disk-1] takes ages to load and the second disk does not load at all.

BD players are all considerably slower in response times to DVD players (with the possible exception of the PS3). However, they're getting better and you'll get used to it in a short time.
And yes, as a general rule I'd suggest you keep your firmware up to date. It's unlikely to give you the drastically improved response times you'd like, but Blu Ray is an immature technology and there are still loads of bugs out there. The Sony update site should tell you what each firmware update includes.

Thanks TomK,
I installed the latest firmware [4.1] and it now loads the disk it was giving problems with [the first of the new Batman films]. It is still slow.
The Sony site does not give a lot of info but basically you download an executable to your PC and run it ; that produces an 'iso' file that you burn to CD [I used Nero to produce an 'iso' format CD] ; then you load the CD in the BluRay player and after about 10-mins the update is done. The download is 50Mbytes.
