Flatcap versus Hicap

Posted by: Jack911 on 05 January 2004

I'm thinking of using a Flatcap on a NAC102 rather than a Hicap. The reason being that a good secondhand HC seems to fetch around £500 while a Flatcap can be had for about £150.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade or am I better off waiting until I've saved an additional £350 and going straight to a Highcap?

Also, as the new Flatcap II can drive both a CD and a preamp, can I assume that a single Flatcap I drive both a CD3.5 a NAC102?

Save for the Hi-Cap. I was running my 202 with a FlatCap2 until a couple of months ago when I forked out for a Hi-Cap. More of everything and well worth the extra cost.

Also, a flatcap1 will only power 1 device.

I bought a used flatcap 1 for £100. Nothing to lose.

Hi
As far as I have seen on ebay, pink fish and other outlets for second hand kit,Power supplies are forever in demand and if they can be bought at a reasonable price you will never loose money.
This appears to be true of NAPS,SNAPS,FC1,FC2,HI-CAP,SUPERCAP indeed there is money to be made on the right deals and you can move up the ladder as well.
At the moment I have FC2, NAPSC and an older NAP which powers an older NAXO so the field is wide open for me to upgrade (probably a HI-CAP when one appears at the right price then the FC2 will fund another).

I had a flat cap on a 102, it did very little, where as the hi-cap took it to another level.

If you are only interested in getting another box, then get the flatcap, otherwise save to make it worth while.

For me, Naim pre-amps are almost unbearable without a *-cap. A Flat-Cap or SNAPS2 makes it bearable, while a Flat-Cap2 makes it nice, a Hi-Cap makes it really good, and a Super-Cap makes it something super-duper-special. Wink

i have just put a hi-cap on my 112/180 pairing and jeez the amount of bass extension and solidity is astounding, the music is more open than before. It is astounding and i am still smiling after 4 days of listening. And all this for £500, a veritable bargain.

The cap has allowed my 180 to grab my Epos ES22s by the shortand curlies and take control in a way that i thought impossible.

for the first time i really have begun to appreciate how good my speakers are and what they are capable of Smile

regards, keep us posted
