What a load of old cobblers!
Posted by: Whizzkid on 05 April 2010
I'm in a grumpy mood so naturally I came into HiFi Corner after really quite a while of not looking at this room, I'm usually in the Music Room eating Caviar, Cucumber sandwiches and sipping Champagne with all the guys and gals in there. So after some time I think I'll take a look in here and start reading the advice in this room and thinking what a load of old cobblers (to our lovely foreign inmates its English slang for someone giving out bad or inaccurate advice).
So what do many of you Naim people think is poor advice, that is usually given out?
I'll start.....
72 is a better pre than 82. COCK
202 doesn't work properly without adding £1400 pounds worth of Power supplies to a £1650 pre, why not just buy a f'ing 282. Double COCK
Naim don't make good speakers. Usually given by people who have never heard them.
Supernait is better than 202/200, its not better than my 102/200, and Naim would be shooting themselves in the foot if it did, just bad business.
If you're not liking the sound of your kit chuck more money at it. Usually given to newbies who are having a little bit of buyer remorse as Naim is bloody expensive and also the dreaded burn in/ears adjustment time.
I listen to "weird" music now thats just slander by the noodling Jazz/grandad Rock brigade.
Valves are rubbish, whoops sorry wrong forum.
Am I deluded? correct? need to bugger off back to the music room grumpy? comments welcome.

This thread promised so much yet there has been far too much agreement for my liking.
I am very disappointed

Well I was going to take exception to the n-Sats and bass comment....
Suffice to say they are surprisingly good when wall mounted on the n-brackets. Not going to worry their bigger brothers, but I can't wall mount a pair of SBLs or Allaes over a stairwell.
OK, I could, but it would be nice if they were in the same place in the morning...

I couldn't afford to go out and by a 282, so I was happy that the PSU's did the remarkable job that they did.
Mike,
I'm not saying that adding a hicap after you have purchased a 202/200 combo is wrong its just I've seen people state that its not any good bare, without the power supplys added which as I said is utter COCK.

On the money with that one Dean.
When I got the 202/200 it was fantastic. Better again when I added the FC2X, and improved again when I got a NAPSC2.
We have to remember that, even at entry level kit, we have systems that stomp all over of the music playback kit that 99% of people have.

I have one essential requirement in any music system : does it make me want to listen to more music. If I rapidly get bored and go off to read a book etc, then I don't care how "transparent" it is, or how well it "images, to me it's "not fit for purpose"

I'd second that. Perfectly put.
Listen to the music - not the technology.
My system makes me to want to do that.

I think a bare HiCap sounds brilliant. Transparent, inky blacks, low noise floor.
And anyone who says different is a knob.

... Edited as it quotes a strongly moderated and offensive post.
And people that get up my nose are self-opinionated bigots who can't be bothered to actually listen to anything themselves but like to dream-up things they have not actually heard to be offended at.
But we should expect that from one of the biggest COCKS on this forum!

Thanks for the kind offer, but I shall decline

My main crime on this forum is reporting what I hear and enjoying my system as it is. When I actually hear something better I can afford I tend to purchase it (unfortunately for my bank balence). Speakers are a personal taste - I have not heard anything better than my existing Briks. I have no delusions about them, but just so disappointed that I have yet to hear anything better - CRIME!
I must learn to pretend to hold the consensus view of the great and the good (and the bad and the ugly)...no I think I will just say it as I hear it and weather the crap.

A reply was evoked - I don't mind his opinions but bringing my friends in to justify his personal rant is low, even by his standards.
Strongly opinioned comment and debate - fine!
I don't feel the need to justify my own opinions by quoting others opinions probably given in confidence.

Dean,
How's the Caviar and Champers going down?
Agree with all you say although must say being a noodling grandad that I do take a lot of stick from the F--- Button brigade over in the other place.
Off to dust down my Kenny Ball LPs

Lindsay

I'm sure there was no malice intended & no reason whatsoever why you should want to change speakers if your existing briks meet your needs. Any further briks questions should be referred to Kuma - I think there is a web site briks.com?

DB, all the time I've been reading the forum you have been consistent in the view that the Briks, whilst not perfect, work in your room.
You have also said that when someone shows you a pair of speakers that work better in your room you'll most likely replace the Briks.
Having just been through a change the speakers I'm acutely aware of the interaction with the room. I'm also indebted to Nigel (hungryhalibut) for letting me have a good listen to his system, and Julian H for helping me get the best out of the n-Sats I bought.

Speak as you find it DB, much better for the rest of us to learn

You don't have to justify yourself. You've put the system in that suits you.

Go on put the Naca back in, you never know

Now guys I don't want pistols at dawn just some myth busting views on what is bad advice like....
Naim speakers need to be up against a wall to work properly.
B&W speakers can rock with the best of them.
Briks are clean, clear and open sounding.
