Barry Adamson

Looking at the desert island discs thingy and seeing someone else listing a magazine album, made me think of their old bass player - Barry Adamson. I have one of his CD's 'Soul Murder' does anyone else have any others and what are they like?

Hi Fisbey,
Strangely enough Soul Murder is one of the few Barry Adamson albums I don't have! I suspect however that it's similar to the rest of his work - intelligent, offbeat, slightly noirish & nightmarish filmic music.
Of his albums I think Moss Side Story, his first, is probably his best if only because the filmic nature of his work suits the "storyline" in parts 1, 2 & 3. (on a digression - if you like this album Try John Zorn's Spillane for a similar but more jazz inflected approach).
Of the rest "Oedipus Schoemidipus" and "King of Notting Hill" are also quite good value and each also features Barry in funky groove mode on album openers "Set the controls.." and "Cinematic Soul".Oedipus also features a few guests, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, etc and tends to be a bit more varied than the others. It also has in "It's Business as Usual" one of the creepiest/disquietening songs ever recorded.
He released a "greatest hits" album in 1999 which may bear investigating, but I really feel he is an album guy and the songs may loose something outside of that context.
Definitely one of my favourite artists.

Fisbey,
The compilation that Giles refers to is "The Murky World of Barry Adamson" and a fine starting pointing point it is.
I also have "As above, so below" on heavy rotation on my iPod mini.
Barry is a very under-rated musician that needs more promoting.

I'd agree with most of what Giles has said.
Moss Side Story is probably his best album.
The Delusion OST is worth getting for the version of These Boots Are Made For Walking.
The Negro Inside Me is pretty good, some very upbeat tunes on it.
His last 2 albums, As Above So Below and King Of Notting Hill strike me as being less inspired.

I agree, Baz is a hugely underrated artist.
Moss Side Story is the one to go for but Soul Murder is almost as essential. The Negro Inside Me is pretty fgood, if a little short.
If you ever have the chance to catch one of his rare live excursions, do so - he's awesome.
