Setting VTF on an EKOS. Proper viewing angle?

Posted by: Jaybar on 28 May 2001

This may seem silly, but depending on the angle you view the red dot and how far over the tone arm is on the record relative to the spindle, the white hash marks appear slightly differently in relation to the red dot. What is the correct viewing anngle and how far toward the spindle should the arm be when setting VTF?
Thanks,

Jay

Jay:

I have never heard of a "correct" viewing angle for setting VTF. I would suggest experimenting with very small changes of VTF and setting by ear somewhere around the manufacturer's recommended ideal for your cartridge. From my experience, every cartridge is slightly different and should be adjusted by ear. I would not worry at all about a "correct" viewing angle to set the VTF.

You will notice the viewing angle will change depending on which eye you close when you are viewing the tonearm.

The solution: use one eye.

As I only have sight in one eye, your suggestion is perfect :-).

Dear Jaybar,

My sincere apologies if I may have caused offence.

But my posting was in all seriousness as I was under the presumption that you had two (functional) eyes.

For example, when I have adjusted the azimuth on a cartridge it's easy to get it wrong. i.e. a correct mirror image in one eye, and then an incorrect one in the other, by looking at it with both eyes independantly.

Given we have established that your eyes are not the culprit, may I suggest that you keep the position of your head fixed when making your adjustments to keep a fixed reference point.

Otherwise as Paul B suggests listening is the best way. That is what I do.

Anyway, sorry if I caused any offence. I did not mean to.

regards,

Dev

I could not resist. I could not believe that having sight in one eye, would ever be an advantage. Have a great day.

Jay, I am glad you were not offended. Thanks.

Perhaps what I should have said instead of the eyes and head stuff is that you should get a proper tt - namely a Well Tempered which is unaffected by cats, dodgy eyes, etc.

cheers,

Dev
