HDX & 555PS
Posted by: andrew jameson on 29 May 2009
I'm currently 3 days into a home dem of the 555PS on my HDX - I know it's kind of inevitable but this really is a super upgrade over the XPS and one that I'm going to find tricky to send back! (it's clearly warming up too ...)
In summary the new PS gives a much lower noise floor, a greater sense of space and shape around each note, enhanced resolution across the range, so way more top and mid range detail and better resolved deeper tighter bass. With the XPS I always had that nagging sense that i'd downgraded from the CDS3 but no more, in fact I think this combo is very capable indeed to the extent that my vinyl has hardly had a look-in recently ... AND we've got the DAC to come VERY exciting

Hi Andrew, tx for this posting! i bought hdx&xps never heared a 555 psu on hdx... But i must say, that i've a problem to add such an expensive psu- think it costs more than hdx itself?

I didnt hear the HDX with an XPS, but when the 555ps was added to the bare HDX the difference was HUUUUUUGE! It relaxed any chaos in the music, making it easily digestible. Not to say that it changed any aspects of "presentation", more that it changed how the information is delivered.
Yes it is a few hundred more than the HDX, which is tough to swallow. But maybe you can look at it as a more budget friendly option to a 555/555ps.
At least you will be able to use the 555ps for years and years on what looks to be many upcoming sources from Naim.
I would LOVE to hear from any other HDX/XPS users who have demoed the 555ps and what they think. and/or vice-versa.
Obviously andrew thinks it is worthwhile.

Gary initially bought it withan XPS after extended auditions and then I told him he had to hear a 555ps. One short audition and he never took an xps home.

PC, it was a big difference between the 555PS and the XPS2. I was really impressed with the XPS2 and JS and the guys at PM thought that this was as far as one needed to go with the PS until they hooked up the 555PS. Their initial impression was based upon the prototype unit during the rounds before the final product was released.
It's worth it and as you say at least these things are recyclable to other units--thankfully.

I've got the 555PS as well to use with my HDX. I must say that I was initially very impressed with the HDX on its own - but when I hooked up the 555PS - what a difference. The sound opened right up, music became more palpable. I'm curious, however - only one of the outputs from the PS is being used. Can the other one be used to power other Naim gear?

Yes, the extra socket is used to power the digital sections of the CD555.
But that is it.
I love the 555PS and actually never brought an XPS2 in to Tune for demonstration after hearing the one against the other. It just hardly makes sense in a way. If you are adding an XPS2 onto a CDX2 or HDX, the price differential, in context of the whole source and system, isn't that big to stretch to the 555PS for someone who is in the position to do that. And it just sounds so much sweeter.
Plus, comes with a free Powerline!

i understand that the 555ps is something special. xps 1 models are quite reasonable right now. and can cost up to 7 times less then even a used 555ps. i know, that some just need the best. but honestly, is the hdx with an xps 1 and an s-burndy not good enough ( also from VFM ) ?
when the dac will be launched and there will just be the possibility for a 2 box solution, what will it be ?..hdx + xps ( what ever xps. xps1 - 555ps ) or the hdx + the dac ?

hi pylod,
good point! i think of powering dac with xps, not hdx with xps!

The PSU will no longer be used with the HDX if you get the DAC, but will be used with the DAC.

maybe you understood wrong. i ment not a 3 box solution like hdx / dac / xps...but just one of the 2 boxes together with the hdx...what will bring the hdx further in performance: the dac or the xps ?
since none heard the ready dac it is a speculation of course

Gary1 - how do you know this? Could it be possible that a PSU each could be used with the HDX and DAC? Could get pretty pricey. As well - could the second socket of the 555PS be used to power the DAC? Just speculation right now, it seems.

Firstly, at the show they used the HDX/555PS and when they added the DAC the 555PS was switched to the DAC.
Having the PSU on the HDX for the dig out would not make any improvement you want it on your analog portion which would now be on the external DAC.
Haven't heard anything about the second socket and the ability to use it for the HDX. I would suspect not, but...

I've tried the dig out of an HDX with and without. Effectively the same. Actually best without even the Burndy jumper plugged but very subtle differences all around.
