Tim Buckley- Starsailor

Why, oh why does this this record not get a release on CD. Just heard 'Down by the borderline' on Stuart Maconie's 6 music show. True genius, had to dig out my old cassette recorded from vinyl about twenty years ago. It goes for silly money whenever one comes up on Ebay. A real gap in many people's collection.

Amen to those sentiments - Starsailor is incandescent.
I have an original US copy on vinyl, plus for US$ 21.99 (+S&H) on eBay I recently scored a CD consisting of this and Blue Afternoon - turned out to be a 'professionally produced' CDR with quite reasonably artwork. I was suitably scandalised not to have been made aware in advance that I was buying a CDR but the vendor said eBay won't allow CDRs to be offerred for sale. In the end I was reasonably happy as the sound quality is excellent and the price acceptable - however as I got shirty the vendor is now refusing to answer my emails.
So, anyway, it is available in the digital domain at less than silly money if you are OK with CDR.

This record was re-released on Rykodisc in the U.S. about 1989-90 or so; I picked up my copy, along with "Blue Afternoon", around that time.
Due for a reissue, though...

Picked up my copy in the USA must have been 1991 or so. Here's a little known fact, if you get hold of a copy of the DVD "The Monkees Our Favourite Episodes" on Rhino you can see Timmy singing "Song To The Siren", Amazon have the DVD available.

I have a CD reissue by Bizarre/Straight Records (Rhino), which I bought in the US about ten years ago. The cover shows a re-release date of 1989 and has the catalogue number R2 70360. You may want to check with some US retailers to see if it's still available.
I'm listening to it now (gloat, gloat).

Its going on Amazon.com for $250. Think I'll wait for the re-release.

I don't blame you for waiting.
Personally, and I shall say this in a very small voice, I don't think that it's a patch on some of the earlier records or even the "sex funk" of "Greetings From LA". But it's not for sale!

Oh well, it would be a boring old world if we all liked the same thing. There is much to admire on Goobye and Hello, Greetings from L.A., Lorca, Happy/Sad and Blue Afternoon but "Starsailor" is a genuine Magnum Opus. Inpenetrable and formless on first listens gradually revealing a depth and power undreampt of by most other performers (and I'll say this in a very quiet voice) even Jeff (Who may have got there in the end, but, sadly, we'll never know).

Would like to get an album by Starsailor - have always considered them a Suede mk2 - well, at least whenever I heard them on the radio I always thought that it was Suede releasing a new single or something!
Cheers,
Jon
