96k sampling rate on Uniti
Posted by: ferenc on 18 November 2009
Since last week-end I am using my old first gen Intel Macbook through Toslink with the Uniti as DAC/amplifier and it seems it can decode 96k digital audio from the Mac. I can not check if there is any downsampling going on inside Uniti, but it sounds bloody wonderful with downsampling or not.
I do not know how many of the Uniti owners have a Mac, but do not afraid to use it, mainly if you have higher than 48k sampling rate files, you won't be disappointed

Ours is streaming 96k. Dave was kind enough to install a beta update on his last visit. I really need to try a MAC again or even a Windows 7 PC with stock dig out. Always thought MACs were better stock but I just don't know anymore. They may not be as good as streaming or the absolute best overall used that way but there's nothing wrong with getting a better, musical result for free if you have a Unity etc. and good 96k always brings a smile. It doesn't have to be best unless claimed to be as long as it's a nice upgrade.

I've always found my intel Mac produces stunning 24/96.
But the paucity of music I like in that format is a bigger issue.
I'm still amazed at how good 16/44 can be, if mastered properly, of course.

How was this upgrade done? Do I need to return my Uniti to the dealer or can it be done by me?
I'm eagerly awaiting this update (together with the control through iPhone) as I have purchased some 96k music in the Linn store

It was done in the shop by Dave and I was with a client at the time so I'm not sure but probably via CD or stick as it stayed on the shelf. I believe you can access the Uniti in a network via Iphone right now with a good UPNP plugin.

The upgrade is will be done using a PC and the RS232 port. We did it to test the Beta software and it is amazingly simple.
Re the iPhone, you can access and control the UPnP stream with a UPnP plug like Plug Player bit you cannot control the Uniti

Now that you mention it, I remember Dave saving a file in our PC. Thanks for the correction.

Can anyone confirm (or failing that, suggest) when the new Uniti firmware is likely to be out of beta and widely available?
It would also be good to understand whether this will be self-installable or dealer only.
Thanks,
John

I would say that it will be available very shorty. I do not know whether it will be available for end users to do but it really is very simple and stright forward.

How will I become aware that a firmware update is available for the Uniti? (Apart from reading this forum.)
I can't see a "Support" page on the Naim website.
Just about every bit of electronics that I have bought over the past 12 years has needed a firmware upgrade. So I have had plenty of DIY practice.
