What *cap where?

Posted by: James S on 06 November 2003

Need a bit of experienced advice...

Current set-up is CD5, FC2, Napsc, Nac 202, Nap 200. I've just bought a HiCap and am unsure as to whether I power the 202 off the Hicap or swap the FC2 (put it onto the 202) and put the Hicap onto the CD5.

What's the best way?? (Oh, and why so I don't have to ask such stupid questions in future!!)

Thanks

James,

I would put the new hi-cap on the cd player and have the flatcap for the pre-amp.

Why?

the hi-cap is the better power supply and placing it on your cd player will produce a bigger improvement over the flatcap.

Its the source first theory, have the best sounding source and everything follows on from that.

I recommend you use the HiCap to power the 202.I heard a big improvement in my pre-amp(112) doing this.
I have also seen this debated before. The consensus seemed to be that the power supply had more impact on the pre-amp than it did on the CD5.

Anyway if you have the kit already you can do some listening trials and report back what is the best setup in your system.

good luck

Oh Dear
We must have confused the hell out of you now!

You will find opposite views are what make this forum so interesting. Hang on for some more input to see what the consensus is.

Then do your own test and pick what sounds the best way to you.

This isn't a stupid qustion and as you can see opinions vary.

The thing is try it for yourself, but dont just do 5 minute A/B demo's. Set it up one way and listen for a week, then swap and see what you think, after another week swap back and you should be able to make a decision.

Cheers guys, I'll have a play over the weekend. I take it you leave the normal power lead in and on with the CD5 when you connect the Hicap??

James

I trust everything was to your satisfaction?

As previously stated; you will get differing opinions here.

Go to the horse's mouth - e-mail Naim directly for advice.

Let me know how the system sounds in the new house. Don't despair if it's dissapointing - new listening rooms often need a bit of working on to deliver an acceptable sound.

All's well, picking up the 200 on Saturday (couldn't wait!). Hicap (on the CD5 for now)just warming up at the mo - put it on as soon as I got home last night and I thought "?, where's the difference".

Listened to it this morning - much better. Be interesting to compare it to the FC2 at the weekend when I have a bit more time.

You could sell the FC2 and get a 2nd hand Hi-Cap for about £400 - £500

I use a new Hi-Cap on my CD5 and a 2nd Hicap on my NAP202.

Either way I prefer to Hi-Cap the CD5!..

The better cap should be on the CD player - it sounds better that way.

FWIW

After 6 months of obsessing, I have come down firmly on the side of my Hicap on my 112, and my flatcap on my cd5. It just sounds better, less of an edge, more enjoyable.

I asked the guys at NANA about this, since it seemed counter to source first. They told me that they recommended the Hicap on the preamp, since the Cd5 had quite limited possible gains since only a portion of the player was powered by the *cap.
