Going from Nait-2 -> NAP180/NAC72(?)
Posted by: Alco on 07 January 2003
Hi guys,
This morning I received an email from a dealer who's offering me a mint s/h NAP180 for 995, euro! (50% of the newprice) The NAP180 is only 1,5 years old!
This seems very tempting to me.
I like my Nait-2 a lot, but now 's the time for me to move on up the ladder.
This way I also expect to finally have a much bigger choice in suitable speakers.
I have 2 guestions though.
1. Will my energy bill explosively grow when I leave it powered on permenantly ? (I mean compared to the Nait-2)
2. I wiil probably combine the NAP180 with a s/h NAC72 I've seen at another dealer.
What sonic improvements can I expect ?
Greetings,
Alco

Try before you buy Alco, I didn't like the 72/180 combo. For about 1000 euro you can get a 102, which IMO suits the 180 a lot better!
But beware, when you buy a pre/power, will your rack be big enough?! Otherwise that story starts again ;-)

Hi Alco,
On www.highendmarkt.de there's a 72/Hicap/140 for sale.Asking price is just 1000 euro for the lot.For that kind of money I should even keep the Nait-2.
Regards,
Rob.

Thanks for the tip Robbie, but I prefer buying s/h Naim equipment from a dealer.
You're right about the rack bas. My current SO system support isn't enough to house a CDX,180,72.
Unfortunately I can only try-before-buy the NAC72. What didn't you like about the 180/72 combi Bas ?

Thanks for the replies y'all,
Hmm, I'm still in doubt though.
('doubt' is my middlename
)To be honest, I promised myself not to buy anything this year before auditioning it first. I want/expect a NAP180/NAC72 to be a major improvement over a Nait-2, but actually that's also what I expected from a 72/140 combo. The 72/140 wasn't worth the extra cash, imho.
Robbie, I don't think I'll sell my Nait-2 anytime soon...

Alco

Last weekend I went from a Nait 1 to a 72/180. Despite the fact that it is still early days, the difference is gobsmacking. Compared to the Nait, the 72/180 just does more of everything. I can't pretend to do the whole review lingo thing, but I do know I can follow the bassline much more clearly, and the Kans seem to be digging deeper than before. Also, guitars sound alot sweeter. I mainly listen to hip hop, but I've been digging out alot of Neil Young, Billy Bragg, and Bob Dylan in the last couple of days.
Seeing the missus nodding away to Mermaid Avenue Vol. 2 is the best objective measure I have of the improvement.

Alco, gor for it, the 72/180 will blow your Nait-2 away, anyone who says different is in cuckoo land and does not know how to set up a hifi system!
Hi Slim,
hmm, strange... I posted the same topic in Tony L's 'Flat-earth'-forum. Some regular forum members there advised me to keep my Nait-2,since I also wasn't that fund about the 72/140. They advised me to look for other suitable speakers in my room/for my amp.
Things is, I can't try before buy the 72/180combo (only the 72), so I can't really judge if it's worth all the cash...
I've sent an email to the (NAP180)dealer asking for a little more time (a week)to make my desicion. If the NAP180 is sold within that time, ...bad luck, no sweat.
regards,
Alco

So buy it & then sort out the setup issues & you should then have a mind-numbingly huge improvement
Hi Alco,
I feel a little iffy about these two-ways postings. I'd already responded on PFM and run into the same story here - but with markedly different responses, so I guess you were right to start two threads.
I agree with every word Tom says above. All I had to do was work on his spelling

Alco,
I don't remember if I responded to your 72/140 thread, so...I have never heard a Nait 2, but I imagine it's smooth and not tremendously detailed.
Someone who really loves the Nait 2 will probably not love a 72/140, which is much more in your face, scraping your ears' interiors. A bare 72 does that.
I would expect someone who loves the Nait 2 to accept that the 72/hicap/140 is a very serious music making system, far more powerful and detailed than the Nait 2. They may still prefer the Nait 2, if they value smoothness over power and detail, however (and I won't argue with their choice).
It's painful to think that you must more than triple the Nait 2's cost in separates to better it, but you probably need a hicap with a 72 to beat the Nait 2 - whether the amp is a 140 or a 180.

Hi Phil,
Well, imho the Nait-2 is not smooth and it does deliver a tremendous amount of detail it the source/speakers are up to it.

Alco,
the Nait 2 is a very good integrated amplifier. By moving up to a 72/180 pre-power amp you are going to get all the benefits of the Nait 2 but just more of everything.
More detail, more bass, a more spacious sound. Personally I think you would be silly not to accept your dealers offer and move up to the 72/180.
Then when funds allow move up to an 82 and then you will notice a serious improvement,

If that is/would be true than my choice wouldn't be so hard. I'd keep the Nait!
I mean, the 72/180 (+ decent new support like a Q4) would already cost me an arm and a leg (even s/h) so when a HiCap is also considered a "must" to really let this combo shine,...phew...
That way I'd have to wait 'forever' to be able to afford some new, better speakers
well, I'll wait a few days to think it all over, and will then make a choice.
Greetings,
Alco
