52 Which input sounds best

Posted by: Goldstar on 21 August 2003

Hello Chaps,

My new 52 seems to be fully settled in now, any hints on how to get the best out of it. It is feeding a 250 which is ten years old.

Thanks Robert

It depends on whether you are using a record player. My understanding is that the 52 comes with "k" phono boards fitted as standard. If you do not use a record player, then remove the "k" boards and replace them with "straight through" boards, This will improve all inputs by removing a source of noise being "injected" into the Supercap. Other than that, inputs 1, 2 and 3 are "optimised" (having no tape loop) and in my experience, give slightly more transparency than inputs 4, 5 and 6. Naim also support these findings.....(I have discussed the above points with them.)

Hope this helps

Hello Laurie,

Thanks for the reply. I have 'K' boards fitted for my Troika cartridge. I did not realise that this can inject noise into the supercap. I was mainly concerned with getting the best out of my cd player which is connected to input 2. As you say ,this then appears to be the right set-up.

Thanks again . Regards Robert

You're probably right, but if you were to fit a Prefix, this goes into input 2. Input 1 then requires BNC adapters, so I use it for the NAT02 and run the CDS2 into input 3.

Following advice from my dealer, I always used a tape input for (Prefix/Hicap) LP12 and CDS1 (became CDS2) and found them to sound better than inputs 1,2 & 3. I know Dev B doesnt agree with this though, but you must try it yourself

Either;

Recap and service for the 250, or

Buy 135s.
