Out With The Old In With The New - Allaes Arrive

Posted by: Greg Beatty on 27 April 2003

I got the call from my dealer on Thursday that my Allaes had arrived. So, naturally, I had to take Friday off work to pick them up Wink

Got 'em home and the wife and I started my breathing in the Salisbury air as we opened the boxes. We visited England before we were married and has very special memories for us. Jodi said she could smell England through the other cardboard and foam smells. Hey, why not?

Next, we see the top of the speaker. Jodi says they look gorgeous - Whew!

I dig them out...they are lighter in weight than I thought they would be. And the Allaes were a doodle to setup. Just know that the bottom place is *supposed* to move as it is a leaf spring designed to decouple the speaker from the floor.

Set up they look even better. Nice, very nice.

We had 12 people over a few nights earlier and had been playing the Williams-Sonoma compilation CD "Dinner is Served". This is a jazz CD and, to my ears, is good-sounding CD. Popped it in and off we went.

Wow!!! Nina Simone is lushing out "My Baby Just Cares for Me" and I finally get the point of the song. Her vocal is clear and up front, drawing my attention to it, and what lovely words they are.

As we listen, the CD does not sound familiar. It is like we are hearing it for the first time. Each track sounds so different from the other tracks now.

Louis Armstrong sings "Ain't Misbehavin'" and - my gawd - it sounds like we are listening to an old phonograph. We are transported back in time to another age - this song is truly moving.

These speakers have kick - the most dynamic of any of the five or so pairs I've had in my listening room. And a full, beefy sound. I really like that - the orchestra has body and soul.

My fears about efficiency were also quickly dashed. These things move air even when driven my a loan (no *-cap) Nait 5.

Any experiences out there with what I can expect as the Allaes run in?

Greg,

Congratulations on the Allaes and an excellent description of it's qualities. Yes they get much better over time, several weeks. Some people describe what you noticed as "analytical", I noticed it too. This disappears in time making listening even more satisfying rather than just impressive. I'm afraid I can't prove it is a real physical change or imagined, but who cares?!

Where have you put the speakers? They should ideally be very close to but not touching a solid rear wall (less than 1 inch away is ideal). Also check there is some play in the pins of the speaker wire plugs you should be able to push them in and pull them out a tiny amount (only 1/32 inch?) that is, they should not be locked solid. The play in the plugs applies to both the amp end and the speaker end - turn off the amp first though! Believe it or not this makes a really big difference.

...for your reply. I just re-read my post and - gosh - what can I say? All those typos and stuff - well, it was done at some early AM after getting up to feed Ian (3 months old tomorrow). So I was not on my game when I wrote it but I wanted to capture the enthusiasm while it was still fresh. The edit time has lapsed so I can't fix it either Frown

The fun with the Allaes continued all weekend. I ran a burn-in track for a few hours on Saturday while we were out and it the result was a bit more on the bottom end. Although I have no complaints there as it is (Whew!).

We got the new Madonna CD yesterday and had it playing on repeat last night. I bet my wife has it on repleat all day today. Its good stuff - and doesn't sound like traditional Madonna. She has reinvented herself yet again.

Hi Greg

Pleased to hear you are enjoying the Allaes. I have had mine for just over a year now and I think they took a good six months to sound at their best, and that was with them playing continuosly most of the time we were out, in addition to normal listening.

On the subject of tweaks, already raised. I had the benefit of Jason from Naim look at mine and one of the things he did was to slacken off the nuts on the crossover so that the unit is quite slack. In fact he told me that the optimum solution is to have it hanging loose but not many people go for that (including me!). So you may care to give that a try.

Cheers

Good idea.

When you're positioning for toe in and your speakers are really close up to the wall then the NacA5 is stressing the plug entry. Either take out the screws and allow the crossover to find its own position or split the web on the cable and use a hair drier to form a soft entry.
You really don't want to stress the solder joint on those crosssovers.

Happy listening!
