I went to HMV and blew £100 on vinyl. My new tonearm made me do it!
Fila Brazillia "Old Codes, New Chaos": This is the new re-release of FB's first album (from 1994), and it still sounds great. FOR ALL YOU FB FANS OUT THERE, BUY IT WHILE YOU CAN!!!
Sigur Ros "Agaetis Byrjun": I have this on CD, but now I've got me an LP12 I'm buying some vinyl copies of my favourite things.
Madonna "What it feels like to be a girl": Very strange lyrics at the start of this single, but what a dance anthem! This got my system bouncing and grooving like a banana.
Tosca "Different Tastes of Honey": More dubs taken from their album Opera (when will they release new material!!! I heard loads of new stuff at their performance in London 6 months ago). Anyway, some very heavy and well-crafted trip-hop. Also the inner-sleeves are worth the purchase , kind of makes the eyes go
U2 "Achtung Baby": This takes me back to when I was starting out at university (along with REM's "Out of Time"). The recording is a little mushy at times, but the tunes are as uplifting as I remember them.
REM "Fables of Reconstruction": not had the chance to listen to much of it. Definitely an earlier album of theirs.

Andrew I got the fila one, are they some thick slabs or what!

Yep, just they way I like 'em
However, I did notice that they appear to have grease marks all over them, although they play well.

I've just been onto HMV today (yeah, I know, another stupid move) and noticed that they may be ripping us vinyl enthusiasts off!
I bought Tosca's Different Taste of Honey for £20.99 on vinyl. On CD the same album was £12.99. I've also noticed that vinyl in general has elevated in price so that it seems to be getting more expensive than CD.
So, what is it with them? Has the demand for vinyl surged so much that they can now justify the extra price-tag?
Oh, I forgot to mention that they had Portishead's Dummy on 180g Simply Vinyl for £12.99, far cheaper than the £20 original asking price. So at least I got a bargain (although the CD version is now much less).

Andrew this gradual increase in price is across the board, amazon and virgin are also more expensive for the vinyl version.
Fact is though it seems to sound better!
I have to assume that the lack of demand for Vinyl is what makes it cost so much, the market is there but its specialised.
The fact is all this new stuff is mastered digitally, even the groove cutters are drvin digitally, have you noticed how much louder new stuff on vinyl is?
mabye all this is driving the cost up, mabye its just because they can get away with it.
My outlook is that you can get stuff on CD well into the future, mabye not so for vinyl releases, they certainly seem to be 'limited' addition so worth every penny I rekon.

At least a bit more vinyl is appearing in HMV, rather than being all CD.
If you go to London, try Berwick Street, nearly opposite the Oxford Street HMV. It has about 10 shops selling new & old vinyl and more selling CDs.
Most of these will be ££££ cheaper than HMV. Especially Drum & Bass multi-vinyl sets (one track per side) HMW = £23 - £25, Sister Ray £17
I bought a load of varied music there today, and am enjoying the results now.

David,
Thanks about that, I keep meaning to go down there, but every time I do it ends up being a Sunday (when those shops on Berwick street are closed) - hence go to HMV instead.
Another great place for vinyl shopping is Camden. Although I've yet to find another shop that sells "cut-outs" like when I was at York about 10 years ago.

We bought some vinyl on Saturday, too...
Rach. No. 2; Joyce Hatto / Hamburg Pro Musica (Saga; mid-60s)
Sting; Dream of the Blue Turtles (already have a Townhouse-mastered copy, but this one's very clean and will make a nice present)
Golden Avatar; A Change of Heart (1976)
Paul Field with Roy Martin; Different Yet the Same (1985)
Bach: E major violin concerto; Alan Loveday / Royal Danish Orchestra (ARC, mid-60s)
Tchaikovsky; 1812 overture; NYFSO/d'Artega (Gala, 1959)
Gerry Rafferty; Night Owl (1979)
Steve Miller Band; Fly Like an Eagle (1976)
Vaughn Williams; Job -- A Masque for Dancing; LPO/Boult (Decca "ffrr" -- late 50s?)
Ova; Possibilities (Stroppy Cow; 1984)
Simon & Garfunkel; Sounds of Silence (1965)
Handel; The Water Music (complete): Little Orchestra of London / Leslie Jones (Oryx; early 70s?)
Branford Marsalis; Romances for Saxaphone (CBS, 1986)
Evie Sands; Suspended Animation (RCA, 1979 promo copy)
Adrian Borland & The Citizens; Alexandria (Play it Again Sam Records; 1988)
All of them are quite clean with little noise, and are already improving as they get played a few times. Encouragingly, 2 of them were already "Nagaoka'd".
Total cost for the lot: £14.50
Now that's what I call value!
Best;
Mark
