Unswitched wall socket help
Posted by: bob atherton on 20 June 2009
About 18 months ago we had an extension built on our house that amongst other things is where the hi-fi now resides. I stupidly at the time did not get unswitched sockets installed where the system was going. In the near future I will dismantle the kit and put in two double unswitched 13amp wall sockets.
What make is recommended for this? I’m guessing that it will be Crabtree or MK but I have an open mind. I use a Grahams Hydra at the moment but may consider other mains cables like the Powerline in the future. Thanks

Many people swear by Crabtree, which is what I use, and these can be purchased from Screwfix.
Although I have never compared them against any other manufacturer.

Thanks Richard,
One small thing, though nothing to do with wall sockets, is that I made two small typos on my posting 'were and not where', and wished to correct that. I clicked on the edit button and got this message? I thought this is how one changed typos. Any ideas...?

Edit only works for about 15 mins, I think.

Bob
just done this with unswitched MKs from B&Q. They have a nice 'rounded edge at the top if you're bothered about that sort of thing. Also, they were very cheap.

The, strangely ignored, Forum Rules have:
"As a member you can make posts – these can be edited for some 45 minutes but cannot (as a peculiarity of the software) be deleted.
If you are unhappy with a post – please edit it down to “PD” (Please Delete) and I will delete it when/if I see it."

I've got a switched socket...is it as simple as taking the front off, unwirring and then rewiring and screwing on the new switchless front. Obviously with the mains turned off to save electricity.

It is worth checking where the individual wires terminate in the new socket as to the existing socket as if they are in different places and the wires are short they may not reach.

Good point Trevor. As they are switched MK's at the moment I guess I should use unswitched MK's. Unless the Crabtree ones
really are worth getting.
