Your Desert Island Discs

Posted by: Tim Collins on 11 October 2001

I was having a listen to VU's Third Album tonight and thought "Does music get any better than this?"

I know you go through cycles of listening to different music but there are some discs I always go back to.... This album is one of them.

Therefore, I thought I might try and pinpoint some essentials that I could not be without - some for personal reasons, some just for sheer musical bliss.

1) Velvet Underground - Third album
2) Keith Jarrett - Koln Concert
3) Counting Crows -August and Everything After (Explanatory note: my honeymoon cd! - )
4) Radiohead - The Bends
5) Nick Drake - Bryter Lyter

I know there have been lists on the "top 5 recorded", etc, but try and think of those musical gems which always bring you out in a smile, whatever the weather....

That's a very good album but the live double album is quite a lot better in my opinion.

2) JS Bach: Goldberg Variations (Played by Gustav Leonhardt).

This is the only version I know well, so it may not remain my favourite indefinitely.

Funny to read this, as Glenn Gould's 1981 version on piano has made its way onto the shelves of all social classes, even among hardline classic haters.

I bought it when it came out and it remains a source of pure joy every single time I listen to it.
