Some recent purchases and advice please!

OK,
Met a geezer in a bar in the Barcelona Hotel in Exeter - great place BTW (if on a business expense account Big Grin)

Recommended the following (which I have bought):

Funk Drops - Vols 1&2
Breakestra - Live Mix Pt2
Gil Scott Heron - The Revolution Will Not....
David Mancuso - Loft Vol 1&2
DJ Shadow - Endroducing
DJ Shadow - Preemptive strike
RJD2 - Deadringers
Detroit Escalator Co - Black Buildings

Anyway some (most) of this has blown me away. I've since bought pretty much all DJ Shadow stuff I can lay my hands on. Black Bldgs and Deadringers are BRILLIANT!

Anyone out there care to tickle my fancy with ideas in the same (ish) vein???

If you like Breakestra, get more of their stuff (I have live Mix 1, and the EP with YNQ and Mr Dibbs). Alternatively, go and buy all the Keb Darge funk compilations that are currently in the sale at www.bbemusic.com , that way you'll have the originals. If you want to 'keep the funk alive', you might also want to hit up Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, Sugarman3, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Yesterdays New Quintet, and The New Mastersounds.

You like Gil Scott Heron, you'll like The Last Poets.

If you like DJ Shadow and RJD2, you'll like Controller 7, Mr Dibbs, Sixtoo, Buck 65, etc. You might want to grab the old Def Jux comps, to see if you tastes stretch that way, or even one of the anticon comps (Music for the advancement of hip hop, Gigasingle, or Filmstrip). Yesterday, I bought Stigg of the Dump's debut EP, Still Alive At The Veglia Lounge. I can't recommend it highly enough. If you find it, buy it.

You might also like Funki Porcini, and some of the stuff on the Ninja Tune label.

The Avalanches' "Since I Left You" is record made entirely from other records - several hundred, I think. Thats great fun, something of a smal masterpiece.

Research-wise, deepfunk info can be gained by following the links from www.funk45.com . I strongly recommend downloading all the shows from Galactic Fractures. PJ is a star! On the hip hop front, I rate hip hop infinity as head and shoulders above any other review site in terms of coverage and accuracy. On a smaller scale, Dot-Alt and UKHH are sound.
