Jimmy 'Jinky' Johnstone. 1944-2006

One of the most naturally gifted players I ever had the honour to watch. Ill with motor-neurone disease for quite a while. A tragic loss.

Sad indeed, and I support the blue team from Glasgow.

A fantastic, genuinely world class player. Sadly we don't breed too many like that these.

As Jim Kerr observed on Radio Scotland tonight, Jimmy was best of friends with Jim Baxter and Willie Henderson, leaving all that sectarian shite to a section of the supporters.

That Scotland should have had two such gifted wingers as Jimmy Jinky Johnstone and Wee Willie Henderson playing at the same time shows how deeply we've fallen in the mire at present.

And that's before you even mention the likes of Slim Jim Baxter (arguably Scotland's most gifted player ever), Denis Law, Ronnie Simpson et al.

As a matter of interest, how many of Celtic's Lisbon Lions are still around?

It's very sad to here over a legend like that passing away. Once statistic mentioned today that surprised me was that Jinkly only got 23 caps for Scotland - which makes you wonder just how much better the national squad must have been in those days.

That's three gone now: Bobby Murdoch, Ronnie Simpson, and now Jinky.

Malky I think it was relatively common then. Tommy Gemmell and Sandy Jardine also had old firm mates.

Things seem to have got worse since the influx of all the foreigners. God knows why this should be the case.

Jimmy Johnstone was a great man and a gifted footballer.

I met him at a Sponsor's event and he had humour and dignity, even though his condition would have caused others to go into recluse.

Sadly missed by many and I hope he is sitting with another wing genius, Davie Cooper, and sharing tales.

It is such a pity that certain elements of the media in Scotland care to portray one as a genius and one as an enigma. Please do not buy the Glasgow Herald if you believe in balanced journalism.

One reason for Jinky's lack of caps was the lack of meaningless friendlies.

God rest his soul.
