Attention ROTF; there's a new floppy hatted genius in town!

Devon Sproule plays a mix of country, folk & jazz, & she is an effortless performer.
I saw her recent show at W.O.M.A.D. & she was brilliant.
Her delightful band included pedal steel legend BJ Cole.
I haven't heard any of her records yet, but I have just placed my order!

If you think she is good then listen to her husband Paul Curreri.

Are you declaring 'a bag for my elephant' situation Ewen? Winker

Saw her earlier this year at Cluny in Newcastle, IMO she was very ordinary and trying ever so hard to be quirky - just didn't appeal to me or my 'crew' Big Grin Paul Curreri was a brilliant lyricist and funny, can't imagine he'll move much up the ladder tho.

Dev was on Jools earlier this year. She is playing most of the festivals this year including 'Green man' - I think they call it exposure Winker

Hey what the heck do I know I didn't get the original Floppy Hatted one Eek

Thankee there 555 - sounds pretty damn fine to me. It'll go in my list - a little bit MCC, a little bit Maria Muldaur and there's not wrong with that.

She's not quite got the impact of Basia, but what has - when you first play Oh My Darling!. it just hits you with its pace, its energy and sheer originality.

However, a Basia only comes along once in a long, long time and this here Devon wears a really nice hat.

It is very nice, listenable stuff.

Think I'll mosey on down the Amazon and get me a copy.

Joking aside I liked Devon a lot, but I don't rate her as highly as Basia.
I hope BB plays in the U.K. soon because I can't wait to hear her music live.

I think you'll find he's very busy cutting the grass. Winker

Devon at W.O.M.A.D. - now that's what I call a floppy hat!

'Keep Your Silver Shined' arrived yesterday, & it is very good!
In fact so good I have ordered 'Upstate Songs', her previous record.

Were you tempted to get KYSS ROTF?
If not I could send an evaluation copy. Smile

Sure was - got a copy now and it sounds pretty fine to me - plus Mary Chapin Carpenter is on it and I always buys any record with MCC on it.

Thanks, ATB Rotf

Yeah i've always fancied it but the bill always disappoints me a little, maybe i'm not a true folkie, I guess i'm more an americana roots guy with a bit of love for some british new folk, particularly the female singer songwriters.

Maybe it's not as muddy as GreenMan :-0

Thanks very much for that Diccus. I hadn't clocked DS was there & I'm also excited by Martha Wainwright, as she was excellent at WOMAD.

I gave up on Cambridge in the early 1990s,
because the site gets too crowded & the line up lacks the range of music for my taste.

Apart from the mud how was the Green Man festival?
Don't forget there's always the Orkney Folk Festival to consider for next year. Big Grin

I'll have to get round to posting on it. It was wonderful in so many ways, range of line up, vibe, friendliness, site (in the Beacons), family friendliness, not overly commercial. I missed quite a bit of what I wanted from a mixture of poor sleep, toilet issues, weather and family responsibilities but I would go right back again next year. Highlights were Clare Maguire, Drive by Truckers, Alela Diane, Bowerbirds and I enjoyed Richard Thompson. Sadly missed The National. Smile
