Letters froma dead soldier to his parents. We all moan abouit the youth of today; there is another side. Induced hay fever in me, anyway.

Hello Mum...

Rest In Peace, young man.

Yeah Jon, how dare you express your opinion and pass comment!!!!

Back off guys. It's not like Jon's said young Cyrus was a knobhead who should know better and doesn't deserve to die for us and what he believes and have his letters published because of his poor spelling...Bit of a wolfpack mentality here.

Jon shouldn't need you to defend him. He passed comment and everyone else is free to pass opinion on his comment since he made it in a public forum.

I, for one, found his comments insensitive and said so pretty plainly. I am not part of a pack - I am simply expressing my view on his insensitivity and, IMO, his lack of judgement in posting as he did.

If he disagrees then that's his prerogative. I've expressed my views and will leave it there.

Such sad news. Things like this cut right to the core, and I want to thank Mike Lacey for posting.

RIP Cyrus Thatcher

The comment was one of the most crass postings I've seen in years.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Rifleman Thatcher was killed in action aged 19; some shiney-elbowed, callus-free pontificate mocks him for his poor spelling and grammar. 19. Think about that.

The fact that most people see this as shameful is not a wolfpack mentality; its common decency.

A young soldier lost his life in serving his country. He was not complaining, he was out there because he saw it as his duty. His mother although proud must be devastated. Just imagine how she would feel if she read those comments on spelling and grammar.

It is about sensitivity and decency.

Our soldiers are entitled to respect and support from those of us who are sitting in their armchairs back home.

You seem to think I was agreeing with the sentiment.

I'm not sure why.

However, surely someone should be allowed to express their opinion about grammar should they choose to! And I guess everyone else there own too. However, aftre one, two perhaps three people have passed comment then the matter seems to have been brought to the poster's attention. To continue on and on, does seem very much like a pack based, threatening, bullying, witch hunt mentality to me.

The issue is sensitivity.

How would you feel if some out of touch academic criticised your sons spelling after he had just lost his life.

This was not an appropriate time to make such a crass comment.

I'm wondering if I've accidently stumbled upon the letters pages from the Daily Mail?

OK everyone. I think the point has been made re. criticising the spelling - if you're a teacher, perhaps it's hard not to comment. But let's move on and get back to the topic at hand here...

Probably a judicious piece of moderating!

yes, you are insensitive!! i'd call you more than that, but only to your face!

you know what they say, those who can, do. those who can't, teach!

Have you not read any of the above?
You are now detracting from the purpose of this thread and your insensitivity is risking this thread being closed.
Enough is enough. Move on.
