Mini LP Cd's

Posted by: Tim Williams on 27 February 2004

Does anyone know of a good place (a 'proper' store; not eBay) to pick up those Japanese (and non-Japanese)'mini-LP' CD's - the ones packaged in a mini LP sleeve...?

There are loads I have missed - Led Zep, Genesis, Gabriel, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Doors etc, etc - and I could do with finding them (mainly for space-saving purposes!)

Any clues?

Tim,
They're certainly flatter so take up less space that way but they're also a bit wider (the ones I've got anyway) so if your storage is a snug fit (as is some of mine) they won't slot in.

Sounds like an expensive space saving exercise.

The non-Japanese ones can be found (at least in London) at all the larger Record shops or their associated on-line stores. Amazon and MVC also carry them. The European mini lp's, also called papersleeves (Led Zep, Neil Young) are readily available. The Doors, Peter Gabriel and Roxy Music have become a bit harder to find and the King Crimson are mostly unavailable, but have recently been re-issued in Japan. Unfortunately, like the Japanese mini's I think they initially only come in limited runs.

For the Japanese mini's you can try www.101cd.com - Pick an artist then click on the Japanese flag. They are priced in £ and there is no duty hassle - but they do take a long time to get to you - if at all.

The most reliable on-line shops for Japanese mini's are unfortunately located in the States, so duty may sometimes be an issue. Electric Obiland www.obiland.com has the largest selection followed by www.redtrumpet.com

I know some people don't like Ebay, but the regular Japanese sellers for mini's are very reputable - Do a search for 'Japan mini lp' and it won't take long to identify the sellers who do this for a living - most with 100% feedback ratings.

Unfortunately after collecting these for a few years now I have found there is no single place to fulfill all your needs - you have to look around.

Good Luck

Not answering your question but a comment in praise of this vinyl replica Cds. I think they are great and it is a real shame that all Cds weren't packaged in this way from day one. I'm sure that that some of the continued popularity of vinyl is the nostalgic appeal of the packaging.

John,
I agree entirely. This should have been the standard packaging for CDs. It must be cheaper and there's no problem with bits of cheap plastic breaking off and rendering the whole thing virtually useless. Perhaps back in the early days the marketing folk reckoned it was necessary to differentiate between LP and CD packaging to demonstrate the "new technology".

vinyl replica CD packaging - woow how cute is that - mind you my old eyes would struggle reading the spines of those.
I think it's only fair that vinyl should come packaged in ruddy great jewel cases (keeping the same size hinges) to balance things out.

I've got a couple of DVDs packaged in DVD-case-sized jewel boxes. Talk about heavy, clunky, and fragile.

The 30th anniversary version CD of the Beatles White Album with top opening sleeves, inners, mini poster and group photos etc was magnificent.

They should do this more often
