Posted by: Chaton on 08 March 2010

Why the DVD5 dont play the sound when connected with the naim DAC. I have another dvd (JVC) and another dac (Cambridge)and the dvd play in pcm .

Why the Naim DVD5 is not able to do the same as a old JVC????

Chaton,

is the digital output switched on and set to PCM stereo?

I've moved this to the AV room.

Yes Richard, in the set up the first line is DVD Playback -¨Audio fmt. pref.- PCM STEREO

and on the fifth line: AUDIO SETUP -Digital audio out - Stereo

Is there another switch?

Hmmm... OK, I'm a bit stumped then. I suggest you get in touch with Manu at Dimexs. He's very familiar with the DVD5 and if yours needs checking over then he's your man.

By the way, did the digital output work when connected to your AV processor?

Tank Richard, and I dont have a AV processor, but cd readind in digital is ok, only DVD not work in digital.

We are working on that case.
It seems some disks are rebel...

Hi Manu, I thought that might be the case...

By the way, one thing worth bearing in mind is that not all DVDs will have PCM tracks on them...

PS - Is the DVD5 up to date codewise? This will make a difference. Older code had problems setting PCM modes...

I think now that is time for a upgrade on the DVD5
Most of DVD movie or concert dont have a pcm track so Naim could make a modification or not?

While you are here, Richard send me an Email, same address for me.

Chaton, I suggest you follow AV@Naim's advice and ensure the DVD5's code is fully up to date. Even if a disc doesn't have a PCM stereo track on it, the player should be able to transcode to PCM. AV@Naim, can you confirm this?

Manu, will do. Hope you're well!

Well good, I will contact Manu to get the last update. And I will report here if that resolve the problem...

Tank you everybody: Richard, Manu and AV@Naim

We do. A new Pic is on its way.

Unfortunately this is something that can happen even if we take care.
This is a reason why Naim does not let users to do upgrades by themselves. If this kind of thing would have happened at home, you would have been responsible.

Finally, my DVD5 is back home and perfect, reading dvd in pcm. To try it, my first concert was Phil Collins `FINALLY...THE FIRST FAREWELL TOUR`

Dimexs did a great and fast job tank you Manu

I'm so sorry that after fixing your DVD5 you were forced to watch Phil Collins, I hope it gets better from here.

Life can be so cruel.

Any views on the DVD5 as a transport for the Naim DAC ?
Posted on: 08 April 2010 by Mr Underhill
Hi Doppel,

To expand on my answer on the main forum:

The DVD5 works very well with the nDAC.

I also have a Meridian 596, which outputs 9624 via the spdif - having ripped my DVD-As to file & burned DVD-Vs, the DVD5 is better - unless you like the Meridian presentation, which I find dull.

I have compared the DVD5 to Meridian and top of the line Denon, and the DVD5 floated my boat.

Transports sound different, as do digital cables.

All that said, the laptop/HiFace is better ......BUT, one of the reasons for my buying the nDAC is that I really enjoy watching live concert DVDs, esp when they have a PCM soundtrack. So I get the best of both worlds as the nDAC is a digital hub.
